If a small group of psychiatrists and other mental health professionals have their way at a conference this week, pedophiles themselves could play a role in removing pedophilia from the American Psychiatric Association’s bible of mental illnesses — the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), set to undergo a significant revision by 2013. Critics warn that their success could lead to the decriminalization of pedophilia.

The August 17 Baltimore conference is sponsored by B4U-ACT, a group of pro-pedophile mental health professionals and sympathetic activists. According to the conference brochure, the event will examine “ways in which minor-attracted persons [pedophiles] can be involved in the DSM 5 revision process” and how the popular perceptions of pedophiles can be reframed to encourage tolerance.

Psychiatrists once said that homosexual behavior was deviant and a mental disorder.....they have changed that view...
Psychiatrists are now gonna tell us pedophilia is no longer a mental disorder and try to change that view...and yes, I think this is bullshit.....you're entitled to view it and embrace it any way you like, its a free country....

All I said is that with this progress, can tolerance for incest and other activities that we now view as deviate and sometimes illegal be far away....?

Talking about mental disorders I often wonder why insane people are classified as competent to stand trial. Take the case of Leiby Kletzky, the 8 year old who was chopped up by a member of his community. http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/07/13/boys-body-found-suspect-being-questioned/

There was no sexual component to the case. Surely the guy who did that was insane.

It seems like the classification of mental disorders and insanity are purely arbitrary.

I don't see the connection between removing something from being classified as a mental disorder and removing it from being illegal. Robbing a bank is a not a mental disorder but it is still illegal.
