According to Muslim law

In the news last night was the story of a woman who rushed into a hotel and claimed Gadhafi thugs has gang raped her. She is now facing charges herself because under Muslim law she must have 4 witnesses to her alledged rape.

TRIPOLI, Libya (AP) - A distraught Libyan woman stormed into a Tripoli hotel Saturday to tell foreign reporters that government troops raped her, setting off a brawl when hotel staff and government minders tried to detain her.

Iman al-Obeidi was tackled by waitresses and government minders as she sat telling her story to journalists after she rushed into the restaurant at the Rixos hotel where a number of foreign journalists were eating breakfast.

She claimed loudly that troops had detained her a checkpoint, tied her up, abused her, then led her away to be gang raped.

Her story could not be independently verified, but the dramatic scene provided a rare firsthand glimpse of the brutal crackdown on public dissent by Moammar Gadhafi's regime as the Libyan leader fights a rebellion against his rule that began last month.

The regime has been keeping up a drumbeat of propaganda in the Tripoli-centered west of the country under its control even as it faces a weeklong international air campaign against the Libyan military.

At a hastily arranged press conference after the incident, government spokesman Moussa Ibrahim said investigators had told him the woman was drunk and possibly mentally challenged.

"The boys she accused are bringing a case against her because it's a very grave offense to accuse someone of a sexual crime," Ibrahim told reporters in the Libyan capital.

Before she was dragged out of the hotel, al-Obeidi managed to tell journalists that she was detained by a number of troops at a Tripoli checkpoint on Wednesday. She said they were drinking whiskey and handcuffed her. She said 15 men later raped her.

"They tied me up ... they even defecated and urinated on me," she said, her face streaming with tears. "The Gadhafi militiamen violated my honor."

The woman, who appeared in her 30's, wore a black robe and a floral scarf around her neck and identified herself. She had scratches on her face and she pulled up her black robe to reveal a bloodied thigh. She said neighbors in the area where she was detained helped her escape.

The Associated Press only identifies rape victims who volunteer their names.

As al-Obeidi spoke, a hotel waitress brandished a butter knife, a government minder reached for his handgun and another waitress pulled a jacket tightly over her head.

Al-Obeidi said she was targeted by the troops because she's from the eastern city of Benghazi, a rebel stronghold.

The waiters called her a traitor and told her to shut up. She retorted: "Easterners - we're all Libyan brothers, we are supposed to be treated the same, but this is what the Gadhafi militiamen did to me, they violated my honor."

It soon turned into a scene of chaos with journalists attempting to protect the woman from government minders who physically attacked and intimidated her.

Journalists who tried to intervene were pushed out of the way by the minders. A British television reporter was punched, and CNN's camera was smashed on the ground and ripped to pieces by the government minders.

Well, considering Iran, Saudi Arabia, Libya, and virtually every other Islamic country requires four witnesses to support a rape conviction, I'd say that link is pretty much irrelevant. Nice try, though.

Tell me, if Muhammed was not a false prophet then what was he? If he's a false prophet, then he was a liar, and therefore a terrible person who has deceived a billion people. But if he's not a false prophet, why aren't you converting?

Last night for a few brief shining television moments (captured here [3]), Wafa Sultan, courageous author of the indispensable jeremiad “A God Who Hates [4],” strove gamely to educate Bill O’Reilly—often seemingly impenetrable [5] by facts regarding Sharia—about how Islamic Law, patterned on the “perfect example” of Islam’s prophet Muhammad, sanctions rape.

The news “hook” for Wafa’s unfortunately rare appearance was the recent alleged rape of a Libyan woman, Iman Al-Obeidi by Qadaffi’s minions.

As a working physician in her native Syria, Wafa noted that she was familiar with “many such crimes” committed with the sanction of Sharia—Islamic Law. She elaborated that under Sharia,

Any sexual activity is considered the give right of a male…A Muslim woman cannot report being raped because she will be asked to provide four witnesses otherwise she will be accused of committing adultery, and she will be stoned to death.

The scholar Ibn Warraq [6] affirms this “iniquitous situation.” He notes that Koran 24.4 [7] states: “And those who accuse honourable women but bring not four witnesses, scourge them (with) eighty stripes and never (afterward) accept their testimony – They indeed are evil-doers.” But Warraq elaborates how this injunction renders women defenseless under misogynistic Islamic Law, past and present:

Muslim jurists will only accept four male witnesses. These witnesses must declare that they have “seen the parties in the very act of carnal conjunction.” Once an accusation of fornication and adultery has been made, the accuser himself or herself risks punishment if he or she does not furnish the necessary legal proofs. Witnesses are in the same situation. If a man were to break into a woman’s dormitory and rape half a dozen women, he would risk nothing since there would be no male witnesses. Indeed the victim of a rape would hesitate before going in front of the law, since she would risk being condemned herself and have little chance of obtaining justice. “If the woman’s words were sufficient in such cases,” explains Judge Zharoor ul Haq of Pakistan, “then no man would be safe.”

Your comments tell me you didn't read the article.

Who am I, or you for that matter, to decide who is or isn't a "false prophet?" Is the Angel Moroni a false prophet? Is Jeremiah a false prophet? Are the Oracle of Delphi or Zoroaster false prophets?

Your comment about converting is bogus and snide. I already told you I was Catholic. Since when does the acknowledgment that all religions have their own beliefs, prophets, practices, etc. mean that you have to convert?

By your logic all the US military is evil because Jeremy Morlock and his Afghan kill team went off the rails and slaughtered innocent human beings.

You're really not interested in discussing the topic. You want validation from the ones who believe as you do, and the opportunity to launch snarky comments at those who don't. No wonder people don't want to address your post.

The Qur'an:
Qur'an (2:282) - Establishes that a woman's testimony is worth only half that of a man's in court (there is no "he said/she said" gridlock in Islam).
Qur'an (24:4) - "And those who accuse free women then do not bring four witnesses (to adultery), flog them..."
Qur'an (24:13) - "Why did they not bring four witnesses of it? But as they have not brought witnesses they are liars before Allah."

From the Hadith:
Bukhari (5:59:462) - The background for the Qur'anic requirement of four witnesses to adultery. Muhammad's favorite wife, Aisha, was accused of cheating [on her polygamous husband]. Three witnesses corroborated the event, but Muhammad did not want to believe it, and so established the arbitrary rule that four witnesses are required.

Rape is virtually impossible to prove under Islamic law (Sharia) and even in more moderate countries. If the man claims that the act was consensual sex, there is very little that the woman can do to refute this. Islam places the burden of avoiding sexual encounters of any sort on the woman.

On October 30, 2008, the United Nations condemned the stoning to death of Aisha Duhulowa, a 13-year-old girl who had been gang-raped and then sentenced to death by a Sharia court for fornication (Zina). She was screaming and begging for mercy, but when some family members attempted to intervene, shots were fired by the Islamic militia and a baby was killed.

Local Sharia courts in Bangladesh regularly punish raped minor girls and women by flogging and beating them with shoes.[1] Similar cases of punishing raped women are Mina v. the State, Bibi v. the State and Bahadur v. the State.[2] Sharia courts in Pakistan have punished thousands of raped women by long term imprisonment.[3]

You might think that such horrific barbarity cannot be the real Sharia law; that it is a misapplication of the law by ignorant clergy. Sadly, neither is true.

There is a traceable dynamic in Sharia Law that is bound to lead to this barbarity. And unless we abandon these laws we will never be able to emerge from this barbarity. It was a blunder that Muslim jurists included rape in the Hudood section of Sharia Law that deals with murder, bodily harm, apostasy, drinking, defamation, theft, adultery and highway robbery. But anyone who tried to change these laws ended up banging their heads against the wall. Mawdudi, the founding father of modern Political Islam, claims that even if all the world's Muslims together wanted to make the slightest change in these laws, they would not be allowed to do so.[4]

I read it. As I stated, it means nothing when virtually every Islamic country practices otherwise. Who do you expect me to believe: Islamic spin-doctors attempting to make their backwards religion relevant in the 21st century, or the actual practitioners of Sharia law?

Who am I, or you for that matter, to decide who is or isn't a "false prophet?"

According to the Bible, anyone who makes a prediction that does not come to pass and/or whose teaching conflicts with the Bible is a false prophet. I am assuming you, being a Christian, believe that to be true?

I expect people to believe the facts but I don't think facts about Islam matter to you.

"Sharia law governs a number of Islamic countries, including Saudi Arabia and Iran, though most countries use Sharia law only as a supplement to national law. It can relate to all aspects of civil law, including property rights, contracts or public law."

As a Catholic, I hold with the declaration below, and it doesn't say anything about "false prophets".

3. The Church regards with esteem also the Moslems. They adore the one God, living and subsisting in Himself; merciful and all- powerful, the Creator of heaven and earth,(5) who has spoken to men; they take pains to submit wholeheartedly to even His inscrutable decrees, just as Abraham, with whom the faith of Islam takes pleasure in linking itself, submitted to God. Though they do not acknowledge Jesus as God, they revere Him as a prophet. They also honor Mary, His virgin Mother; at times they even call on her with devotion. In addition, they await the day of judgment when God will render their deserts to all those who have been raised up from the dead. Finally, they value the moral life and worship God especially through prayer, almsgiving and fasting.

Well Gee, then when can we expect Christians to begin denouncing Glenn Beck as a false prophet for the NUMEROUS predictions he has made that have failed to come true and his teachings which obviously run counter to what the bible teaches...

Voltaire's not a Catholic, though. Its only Eucharist-receiving Papists such as ourselves that have to deal with Vatican II drivel. Besides, it seems as though Benedict has been getting in a lot of trouble for making insensitve comments about Islam...
