I think every soldier goes through the “what the hell did I fight for”. My hubby experienced that when the large corporations moved into North Vietnam after we departed Vietnam. My hubby felt betrayed, but eventually realized that Capitalism was going to do what bombs and guns couldn’t.
It's good that you were there to help him. I can't begin to imagine how they must feel when they see modern Vietnam and compare it to when they were there. It doesn't help that we all hold the WWII vets up to well-deserved acclaim; it's easy to see what *they* accomplished. Not so easy when you are fighting guerrillas and can't tell the good guys from the bad guys.
