A Rivian EV owner was in a fender bender. The repair bill was $42,000.

Rivian replacement parts aren't mass-produced. $42K still seems high to me so I think we're looking at scarcity...of parts and authorized repair shops. And some scamming too. That repair shop has a golden ticket and it knows it.

Insurance for an electric car may cost more than insurance for a regular gas-powered car. An electric car's higher price tag and more complex equipment means it may cost more to repair or replace if it's in an accident. That can mean higher rates for policyholders who carry comprehensive and collision coverage.

Have you tried to insure your Ferrari? How about your Rolls?

I suspect also that EV's have been designed not giving a fuck about ease of repair.

Many, like in particular Tesla, were designed with an eye to making it impossible--or nearly so--to do any work on the vehicle yourself or with a garage of your choice. Instead, between proprietary data and dealer only parts, Tesla pretty much forces their buyers into using dealer service only. There are lawsuits over 'right to repair' going on, but until these prevail if you are stuck in a POS Tesla, you have to pay premium for any repairs the vehicle needs.

Ya I have heard about that, but I am thinking more along the lines of a car in the 70's (I forget which one) where the oil filter was almost impossible to change because the engineers and design teams forgot about that.

Why would you think that? I suppose because you want to. However, a new auto has repair and maintenance a couple of its objectives. You do not ignore important factors like that. You want repeat customers and a good reputation. You do not build plants and assembly lines to throw them away after a year or 2.

The 429 Boss Mustang you had to loosen a engine mount and jack the side of the engine up to remove a rear spark plug.

And maybe you spend your time not thinking of reasons to hate liberals. It would do wonders for your mental health.

People are buying EVs because they're cool cars to drive. They're easier and cheaper to maintain. Less moving parts. Simple technology and more reliable. Cheaper to run, too.

Oh, and EVs good for the planet? Icing on the cake. Everybody wins.... Except you fucking MAGA morons.

I remember years ago agreeing to help someone repair the water pump on a Ferrari. Unbolt the AC compressor and move it out of the way, then the alternator, then the power steering pump, then remove the valve covers, then pull the pump out, after which you have to grind and collapse the rear bearing in this tunnel-like housing because you can't pull it with any kind of bearing puller...
