A Pox on both houses

This shit needs to stop. A horrible precedent is being set. Neither party is doing anything to resolve this shutdown and end it. It's all about which party is going to win this stand off or who's going to blink first so that they can gain some sort of political advantage for 2020.

This shit needs to stop and it needs to stop now. A pox on both houses!

The house has sent two bills to the Senate presumably with enough votes to pass but McConnel has blocked them both.

I personally believe there's enough votes at this point to override a veto if they could just get a vote through.

The proposal by Nancy Pelosi and the House is very fair and reasonable, Mott...and it has the advantage of not giving in to extortion...WHICH WOULD BE A HORRIBLE PRECEDENT TO SET.

The Senate should pass the legislation sent over by the House (it passed identical legislation earlier by an overwhelming vote)...and send it to the White House for Donald Trump's signature.

There is no real equivalency here, Mott. The Democrats MUST NOT give in to extortion. The Republicans in congress should be helping to prevent extortion winning out.
Look there is room for compromise on both sides. From what I'm seeing Democrats are being as intransigent as Republicans.

Granted the idea of a wall is meant for the brain dead and the stupid. I get it. But the funding being asked for, by federal measures, is miniscule. For christ sakes agree to some immigration security measure and a compromise that includes a fence and be done with it. Open the government back up!

What's going on right now is a childish game of chicken.

Trumps is attempting to use black mail and extortion, which the US Congress should never respond to.

The only time I am aware the US government allowed itself to be extorted, is when Bedtime For Bonzo caved to terrorists in 1988.

If Obama had tried to use extortion by shutting down the government to get his stimulus bill passed in 2009, there would have been calls for his impeachment.
Oh god forbid that Trump should score a political point.

This has grown to epic silly proportions and it needs to stop on both side.

there are always dems who always want to cave to the evil tactics of the right

Its one of their tactics

MAKE THINGS SO BAD that the dems cave

the problem is when you cave they do it AGAIN and AGAIN and AGAIN and AGAIN and AGAIN and AGAIN

Wrong mutt... Trump had offered the things the Dems want. What have the Dems done?
They turned them down but keep in mind that Trump is asking for a significant amount of money not to improve border security but to throw a populust SOP to morons. So rejecting on general principle as being the absolute dumbest idea in modern politics isn't exactly flawed.

But it aint worth shutting the government down over.

Look there is room for compromise on both sides. From what I'm seeing Democrats are being as intransigent as Republicans.

I appreciate your frustration, Mott...and I understand where you are coming from on this issue...

...BUT...I respectfully disagree.

Money for the border wall...and re-opening the government are not even related.

To open the government requires passing a continuing resolution...funding the various agencies and departments at the levels they were last year.

The money being requested for the border wall is a new expenditure...necessitated by an unreasonable request that congress fund a promise made by Trump in order to get elected. This comes on the heels of Trump having total control of government for the first two years of his presidency, where (SUPPOSEDLY) he could have gotten this done if he wanted.

He could have gotten this done then.

Granted the idea of a wall is meant for the brain dead and the stupid.

Yes it is. It is abject idiocy. Funding it certainly is. Holding the government hostage to attain it DEFINITELY IS.

I get it.

Okay...then extend that "getting" to consider the ramifications of "Okay, we will give you the wall...and will agree that this form of extortion is acceptable in budget negotiations."

Horrible idea!

But the funding being asked for, by federal measures, is miniscule.

Let's say that $5.6 BILLION is "minuscule." (IT ISN'T!)

But in the grand scheme of things...it is a hell of a lot, considering we are not able to do many things for lack of money.

It should be used there...not as a tribute to a foolishly made campaign promise.

For christ sakes agree to some immigration security measure and a compromise that includes a fence and be done with it. Open the government back up!

Let Trump sign the CR...declare a national emergency on the question of the wall...and see if he can sell it to the courts. He saves face...and the government opens.

What's going on right now is a childish game of chicken.

It is a game he chose to play.

As far as I am concerned any capitulation beyond what the Dems have already offered...is supporting further destruction to our nation by this abomination.

Trump can do this himself. He can both open government AND declare an emergency for the wall.

If Mitch McConnell and the Republicans in the Senate are unwilling to defy Trump in order to get the government re-opened, then Trump should take responsibility for what he has created.

Oh god forbid that Trump should score a political point.

Bingo on scoring the political point.

5B is less of a significant fraction of the budget than Elizabeth Warren’s Indian DNA. You say it’s a waste of money but the Congress has thrown more money than that at rank idiocy and never blinked an eye.

How about we get started on it, and if it doesn’t work, mock Trump and his supporters all you want. Or if does work, just don’t talk about it lol.

Democrats are determined to prevent Trump from even starting on a wall/barrier/whatever out of sheer political spite.

I'm all for a pox on both their houses when it really is both of them. But with this government shutdown, it's Trump's fault. Nobody else's.

well the nwo plan was beautiful, both sides watching the government shut down and projecting their own #winning onto the fog bank of confusion. just like project blue beam.

5.7 bil doesnt seem like a lot in terms of the budget.

This is a typical mealy-mouth leftist tactic. When the Democrats are being completely unreasonable and can't be defended, blame both parties.

IDK, Kacper, ... there's been rumors of cracks on both sides, but nothing has happened. I'm beginning to feel that a National Emergency may be the only way to end the stalemate. But I hope you're right :0)

National emergency wouldn't work. that $5.7B would have to come out of the 75% of government already funded. That would be very difficult without raiding the DoD
