Well thats a new slant on the problem I must say. Is that direct from Faux News?
Taiwan did not OFFER sanctuary. CKS 'moved in' to a primitive island. And it hasnt been called Formosa for generations. Formosa = beautiful Island I believe. The indigenous population was quite primitive having been colonised by the Dutch and latterly the Japs.
CKS and his family bled the island dry as one of the most corrupt families in Asia ... and thats saying something. It became Americanised very briefly but, as usual, the Americans left absolutely nothing of value. Chang Kai Shek had been thoroughly defeated in China and was arrogant enough to run away to Taiwan , calling it the Republic of China.
It was not long before he and his family were building hospitals and temples as purely commercial enterprises. Now, if you want to pray to any of the gods you pay Chengs estate for the priviledge. If you are sick, you pay Chengs estate.
And what of America? What, besides huge amounts of dollars, did you leave?
One word.

NOTHING

No democracy, no freedom. You used it as a market for arms and a strategic point from which to annoy both China and Japan. You propped up the KMT as you prop up so many bad governments and leaders.
Now Taiwan has a healthy economy but is not more than a province of China which it will doubtless become before the passage of many decades.
I have been there twice. Its a shit heap.
It also has the only 'Hooters' where the waitresses have tattoos on their chests saying 'front'!
