Doctors’ Group Opposes Public Insurance Plan
By ROBERT PEAR

WASHINGTON — As the health care debate heats up, the American Medical Association is letting Congress know that it will oppose creation of a government-sponsored insurance plan, which President Obama and many other Democrats see as an essential element of legislation to remake the health care system.

The opposition, which comes as Mr. Obama prepares to address the powerful doctors’ group on Monday in Chicago, could be a major hurdle for advocates of a public insurance plan. The A.M.A., with about 250,000 members, is America’s largest physician organization.

While committed to the goal of affordable health insurance for all, the association had said in a general statement of principles that health services should be “provided through private markets, as they are currently.” It is now reacting, for the first time, to specific legislative proposals being drafted by Congress.

In the presidential campaign last year and in a letter to Congress last week, Mr. Obama called for a new “public health insurance option,” which he said would compete with private insurers and keep them honest.

But in comments submitted to the Senate Finance Committee, the American Medical Association said: “The A.M.A. does not believe that creating a public health insurance option for non-disabled individuals under age 65 is the best way to expand health insurance coverage and lower costs. The introduction of a new public plan threatens to restrict patient choice by driving out private insurers, which currently provide coverage for nearly 70 percent of Americans.”

If private insurers are pushed out of the market, the group said, “the corresponding surge in public plan participation would likely lead to an explosion of costs that would need to be absorbed by taxpayers.”

Guess the doctors finally read the draft bill that the democrats plan to force on the American people and realized that it sucks and they will be nothing more than government hourly workers.

The introduction of a new public plan threatens to restrict patient choice by driving out private insurers, which currently provide awful, shitty coverage that's leading to the death of tens of thousands a year for nearly 70 percent of Americans.”

I fixed this.

I'll never understand the objection to the government plan OPTION. If their objection is that health insurance companies wont be able to compete, they're basically saying that the government option is too good and it's unfair to the people who want to gouge us.

No shit. The problem with the AMA and the Insurance industry is that they won't be happy until they have it all. Each year they devour a greater percentage of our GDP making it more and more difficult for corporations and businesses to earn profits.

The real hypocracy is that they are all for socializing the cost of health care for the segment of the population, the elderly, that benefits them financially the most and who have the highest health care needs but don't have the finances to pay. If your young and get sick or hurt they want to maximize profits from you through the private sector because your young enough to be in the work force and pay what the market will bear while you subsidize those to young or to old to be in the work force and who present the greatest costs.

Yea no shit the AMA will fight this tooth claw and nail but don't shit yourself. It's money they are fighting for and not the publics best interest.

There just fucking greedy is all.

Exactly, while at the same time they want us to socialize and subsidize health care costs for the elderly and very young. The AMA and Insurance industry wants to have it's cake and eat it too.

The funny part is that the government is introducing what if you took Republicans at their word would be something they'd support: COMPETITION. But of course they're not for competition.

Good. I am all for reform, but not this. Where does he think he's going to get the Doctor's and Nurses for this. We have a shortage already. Ooooops, maybe from India?

Where's he going to get doctors and nurses to give people health care if everyone is insured?

If you're for reform, what the fuck kind of reform are you talking about if you're ruling out reform based on the fact that it'll cover more people?

What's wrong with you?

So 30% have no health insurance and 70% have private health insurance(per your post), that makes up 100%. What about those on Medicare and Medicaid?

Or people on government healthcare for low income people, like Washington State's Basic Health program.

Because its not about competition. The plan is about ultimately getting everyone on the government plan and eliminating private options. You can choose not to see it that way but that's the goal hence the strong opposition.

The opposite plan is for the private insurance companies to get all the tax dollars they can.

Ah a slippery slope fallacy. So you oppose single payer, which obama opposes as well. So you have no problem with Obama's plan, cept for the fact that you want to construe it as a government take-over of your health care.

Personally, I think it's a great first step. We'll see either if it works or if it doesnt. If government health plans are unworkable, that kills the single-payer idea. If it works so well it puts HMOs out of business, then that sort of tells you everything you need to know about it.

It wont put them out of business, by the way. At the very worst they'll provide supplementary insurance like they do in Germany.

Obama's a smart man, he's no dummy. So he's not out there calling for single payer because even he knows that won't fly politically now. So yes he is pushing the system in that direction. And liberals who want single payer for the most part are on board because they know this is the best political way to achieve it.
