A little more than racism and bigotry ...

I have read article after article talking about how racism and bigotry put Trump in the White House. While there is some truth to that, the real truth is somewhere in between. People of all kinds voted for Mr. Trump. This article speaks of another group. While I still think the truth is somewhere between the two extremes, I think there is some truth to this article. In 32 years of voting, I had to stand in line for the first time, as did many of my friends who vote in other rural precincts. I think the title of this article is terrible but the fact is that country folks turned out in record numbers for many of the reasons outlined in the first paragraph. I also think they'd have voted for a cow turd over her. Wait a minute, they did.

"For the past 8 years, the people who live in rural areas of the U.S. have had their social values ridiculed, their religious beliefs made fun of, their educational levels laughed at, their industries regulated, firearm rights threatened, and their character called “deplorable.” So, is it any surprise that it was a very angry and resentful voter that went to the polls on Election Day? While not all rural voters voted Republican, it was largely the rural vote that put Donald Trump in the White House."

I agree that a big message of this election is that Democrats ignored rural/midwestern concerns and has become more of an elitist party. If you look back over the election, Hillary hardly talked about jobs & manufacturing. She even said she wanted to put coal people out of work, or whatever that quote was. She talked more about abortion and global warming, and hardly addressed that a lot of people are hurting.

That said, I think that if rural voters want to be taken seriously, then wild-eyed support for a buffoon like Trump isn't the way to do it. Wearing a Trump hat and yelling "make me a tortilla" doesn't scream "respect our intelligence!"

I'll tell who should be taken seriously.....

the rioters
the looters
the thugs that murder policemen for kicks
the thugs that beat up white people for exercising their right to vote
the marchers that kick in car fenders and break windows and stop traffic
the idiots the confront voters leaving rallys of those they support
the folks in the media that lie and cheat instead of doing their duty
the illegals that think we owe them more rights we give our own citizens
the criminals that defy our laws and the federal gov.'s laws
the criminals that sell their influence to enrich themselves
the criminals that put our security in danger
and on and on....

and we will take them seriously and deal with them seriously
rather than worry folks wearing a Trump hat or yelling 'make me a tortilla'.....which they have every right to do.

No worries, bravs - no one is talking about taking away anyone's inherent right to yell "make me a tortilla!"

Good to know that's what concerns you the most.

Well I would wholeheartedly agree on your comment, the "commentary" not quite as much..

Not like it's Iowa where you have anyone that ever wanted to be president in the last several decades begging to feed you-FREE & OFTEN...

The po' victims had to wait in line, I feel their pain, NOT.... Did they get I Ded?? Who is going to take their guns?? Who is laughing @ them?? No, it certainly isn't the carpet baggers from new york... My bad, they are both carpet baggers from new york.....:palm:

Maybe they will get lucky & the NYC guy will give them more subsidies then the women from NYC, :dunno:

I just gave you a list of what my concerns are....and someone yelling 'make me a tortilla' wasn't on the list was it.....

As a matter of fact "that" doesn't concern me at all.....

not big on reading comprehension are you.

Anarchy should concern everyone and the left has a lock on it. That you'd worry more about people in red ball caps yelling something about tortillas than Trump supporters being dragged from their cars and beaten, is telling.

I think this is to a certain degree a straw man. I mean when someone used bigoted language their called a racist. When they propose ideas that are not only incredibly bad ideas but couldn't possibly work but insist upon implementing them, they get called dumb. When you claim values that legitimize discrimination against others you get your values called into question and if you can't deal with it then don't go down that path and if you openly support those who do, don't come crying to me when you share their stink and I say this as a person who spent half his life in a farm or rural small town and still spends quite a bit of time thee and is well connected with rural people.

So to be honest, there's some truth t what the author is saying and a lot of complete bullshit.

I know why those who live in small towns are angry at our politics. They are seeing their way a life, a way of life that contributed substantially to making this nation what it is and had been for a long time disappear. Their way of life, their belief systems, their institutions, even their children. Gone due to circumstances they can't control and referred to as an after thought by the media who refers to them and where they live as "fly over country".

I have seen the precipitate decline in small towns starting with Reagans election and continuing to this day. The small towns I grew up in were economically prosperous, the down fathers leaders and formidable men who wielded significant influence. They have watched their factories disappear, replaced by foreign competition and lack of foresight and investment, they have watched their prosperous main street businesses boarded up due to monopolistic competition with big box stores, they have watched infrastructure projects, key to their revitalization by pass them as not being worth the effort. They have watched the rest of the nation get globally digitized and connected while they live in an analog world cause some short sighted power brokers decided they weren't worth investing the electronic infrastructure on and they have watched their communities decline, their children leave for greener pastures and the aftermath of social ills tied to poverty and lack of opportunity. That's what your average Joe who lives in small town or rural area is pissed off about.

They have been abandoned by one political party and exploited by the other. Is it no surprise that a rich demagogue has been able to capture their mood and their anger? Not really.

To be honest I hear a lot of spin doctors from both parties talk about the "angry blue collar angry white guy" thing but I have yet to see one who actually understands just why they are angry. Yea there may be resentments about how rural/small town folks are perceived by the media but that's not the reason they are angry.

don't disregard the whole email scandal. people can point to the whole comey not indicting thing as 'she did nothing wrong', but people are smarter than you give them credit for and they can most certainly see when an elitist is receiving political cover for crimes they committed. people have had enough of that from the political establishment.

The email scandal was incredibly overblown, imo. It was just stupidity on her part. Yeah, that's an issue, but it was portrayed as much more insidious and intentional.

I find the truth here. My county voted Trump by over 80%. These are good people. Open and welcoming to outsiders of any color or religion. But are called "Racist" because of some liberal labeling. To make liberals feel better about themselves I guess.
Most I know here, and I speak for my little county here, we voted not for Trump but against Hillary and her economic policies.

but it had less to do with the email than it did with the preferential treatment of the 'investigation' and lies, excuse me, answers that hillary gave the FBI

I get that. But all of that applies to Trump, as well. I don't get how ethics-oriented voters could really favor one over the other.
