A beginner's guide to being an atheist, by Richard Dawkins

The back cover of the Richard Dawkins book I'm reading right now has promotional blurbs from the well regarded astrophysicist Janna Levin and the acclaimed paleontologist Neil Shubin both praising Dawkin's book and practically applauding him as a prophet of atheism.
well-regarded?

well shit, why didn't you say so?

:tardthoughts:

WHy don't you use Google AI to tell you what it says. Like you do when you have a Bible question.
^^ Perry PhD is so impressed with the content and organization of my posts he believes they could only conceivably be possible by artificial intelligence and sophisticated software.

Practically the only time I have to use Google is when you don't believe what I say and I have to give you an independent source corroborating and confirming what I wrote.

In other words, it's entirely your fault if I have to use Google. You could have just accepted what I wrote was generally true.

The most interesting thing about this exchange is the speed with which you backtracked from the claim Paul was a rouge teacher, spewing his own personal opinion unsanctioned by Jesus' apostles and the founding church in Jerusalem.

Just reading the back of a book isn't "reading the book" cy.
Perry the reason I am not constantly frantically Googling like you and getting things wrong like you do is because I read hundreds of books, take hundreds of classes, and watch thousands of hours of documentaries and podcasts.

Your method of cherry picking, frantic Googling, and confirmation bias is absolutely the wrong way to go about getting a decent working knowledge of any subject. You just have to do the hard work of actually learning.

@Cypress: when Cypress wrote something I didn't believe was true, he had to provide me an independent source corroborating what he said.

Pure comedy gold.
ftfy

You're a strange bird, Perry PhD

It actually makes a statement that posters of the quality of you, Freddy Figbottom, and Into The Nightgown make common cause to follow me around and complain about my posts.

@Cypress: when faced with a quote from the Bible he has to run to Google AI to answer it!

Pure comedy gold.
I would as well if I were interested enough to make the effort.

I was raised as a Catholic as a child--
although honestly mostly a wedding and funeral Catholic--

but except for the Gospel recitations at Mass,
even devout Catholics didn't read the Bible much.

Catholicism isn't really about salvation by faith alone as most other Christian denominations are.
Catholicism is more about doing your best.
IF religion made any sense at all to me,
I probably would have stayed a Catholic.
Great architecture, art, and music.

Although admittedly, some African American denominations have more fun music.

Yeah, I really enjoy gospel music.

But really, churches in the US want followers, not thinkers.

And if Cypress hadn't spent the past several months excoriating people for "frantic googling" like he's above it I wouldn't be pointing it out.

Google is fine. Unless you are @Cypress the smartest man in the world.

But it's clear Cy isn't able to support his position with quotes from the BIble, he has to go with AI. That's just sad, actually.

I was raised as a Catholic as a child--

As my wife who is a cradle catholic (lapsed) says: "We wrote the BIble, we don't have to read it".

Yeah, I really enjoy gospel music.

Not white congregation hymns. Those are dreadful.

That's how faith works best. I used to be really enthralled by the Scholastics and the early Church fathers adherence to logic as a support structure but it now kinda feels like the infrastructure they built is not as firm as I once thought.

It's okay if you don't have a logical reply. I was simply curious if you did. :)
Churches are businesses, dude. They want people in the pews, listening to the sermon, maybe a little music and dropping the money in the collection plate.

They don’t want people questioning their dogma. For Christians, the absurdity of the Trinity, virgin birth, resurrection, flood or creation myths. And tons more.

The Mormons don’t want their members to know that Joseph Smith was a conman, that the golden tablets would have been too heavy to carry or that their critical Book of Abraham is bullshit.

True critical thinking and research into those holy books, dogma and the origins of their theology is the surest way to create atheists. Or, in the least, lose their money cows.

Wow. Obviously, you aren't a business man. "Give the customer what they want".

Your claim that churches are cramming their views down the throats of innocent American citizens and taking their money then claiming those citizens don't have a choice in churches or other Sunday morning activities....which is what I do. I only go to church for weddings and funerals...and not many of those. How is that a great business model for those Christian churches you hate so much?
