claim otherwise is nothing but a lie....the ridicule of Palin's "drill, baby drill" cry is obvious proof and Reagans call for more drilling is more proof....

I'm curious, he's said he's going to start issuing leases, but he hasn't said he's going to start issuing permits.....isn't that the problem with current leases?.....getting permits?.......

Well, ANWR is not exactly a "leak on the land" that can be plugged and siphoned as you would a leaky water tank. The whole company line about having little environmental impact just doesn't wash given the past history of oil production .....and remember that when all is said and done, ANWR would at best estimates produce less than a decades worth of oil at current consumption rates.

Yeah, this is just Obama doing his "conservative Democrat" thing, which is really Slick Willy light, IMHO.

Well, I'm waiting for that other shoe to drop...because as they say the devil is in the details. Will Obama just reopen previously moth balled sites? Keep within strict codes regarding Alasaka? And will he keep the alternative energy options alive and kicking? And God only knows what his attitude is towards nuke plants, because IMHO those should NOT be continued.

No one on either side of the political fence is happy with this for obvious reasons. Personally, I just see it as a concession gesture, because it's sure as hell not going to do much regarding current prices at the gas pump.

One idiot obviously decided to pipe in.... not surprising that it came from the Sierra Club. For one, this is in no way helping 'short term profits' for oil companies. These are LONG TERM projects. Second, this will ABSOLUTELY help us on the path to energy independence. The two comments show complete ignorance on the matter and thus highlight the knee jerk reaction that is typical from the extreme environmentalists.

Man, you are one Super Freak-ing gas bag! The oil companies will be compensated by gov't for these projects....just as they are now via their tax situation that was lamely defended on the Hill recently. And even when the projects will be completed, they STILL will not make us wholly "independent" of foreign oil, given the projections of reserves and consumption rates. But the oil companies will boost their profits for a few years.
But wait.... we have another contender for 'I have no clue what I am rambling about':

1) It will improve energy security... again... the more of our own we produce, the less we have to buy from foreign countries
2) It will absolutely create lasting jobs HERE IN THE US, rather than provide them to those overseas
3) This has little to do with climate change. No matter how much someone WANTS us to get off of oil, we are not going to cease using it until economically viable options are put in place. We can begin with Nat gas use in transportation as a short term stop gap, but we are going to need to drill for that as well.... HERE IN THE US.

1) Less doesn't automatically equate improvement in security....our oil companies just don't deal in local consumption, but they have a piece of the international production/distribution of oil as well.

2) Define "lasting jobs"....because essentially the jobs are to construct the rigs, then drill for the oil, then bring up and transport the oil to already exising refineries. So exactly how many jobs are we talking about? And how long would they last given the projections of reserves (assuming the projections live up to reality)?

3) Are you saying that the additional burn offs from the new rigs won't add to local air quality? And the only reason we NEED to keep drilling here in the US is because you have a hefty portion of the economy based on the way things are....and those who mightly profit from that are NOT want to change...period!

Put it this way, The oil industry is VERY reluctant to take measures to better filter their burn offs and such when it comes to processing oil....so adding new plants will just add to the problem.

Has it ever occured to you that we have been gouged and played with at the gas pump for the last 30 years or so DESPITE the oil companies getting subsidies and tax breaks? There is NO oil shortage that is raising prices in so much as the Wall St. speculation.

You seem very fond of calling everyone a "pinhead", yet YOU Bravo, seem to have little more than a headline understanding of just what's going on in the world. Remember, its the people YOU voted for who have no problem with the gas pump prices, and constantly defend the hubris and obscene economic largesse of the oil companies while handing them tax breaks and subsidies.

What do you call someone who supports and defends the very people who are screwing him at the gas pump?
