America, since the inception of income tax, through republican and democratic administrations alike, has taxed those who make more at a higher marginal rate. That is a fact. That tax structure was in place during America's greatest periods of expansion and growth. The political process has fiddled with the marginal rates from administration to administration, but the system has worked. And as I said, during the period of the greatest expansion of our middle class during the 1950's, presided over by a popular republican president, the marginal rate was the highest its ever been... the rich still got rich, the middle class grew, and the country prospered. Yet today, republicans would have us believe that raising the marginal tax rate by a few percentage points - even though it would still be less than HALF what it was during the Ike years - would KILL the entrepreneurial spirit of America... which is a fucking joke.
