The Social Democratic Party were a modern 20th century progressive party dedicated to democracy and a social welfare state. The SDP had more in common with American 20th century liberals than with the classical liberalism of Adam Smith.

And yes, the SDP was the only legal party in Germany to vote against giving Hitler emergency dictator powers. Your fellow travelers in the German conservative parties all voted to make Hitler a dictator.

IMO, it's because they are stupid and/or demented. It's not just ignorance. It's a willful desire to hate and they latch onto people like Rush Limbaugh and believe that Hitler, Communism and Democrats are all the same thing. These people are insane. This is why I not only support better mental healthcare for Americans, but adjudicating insane people like them from accessing the Internet. At least limit their exposure via court-assigned nanny software for their own protection.
