$76.00 PER HOUR

The real issue is something smells about this so called strike. Why would a union go on strike two months before the election? Especially from Maobamas home town.

Me thinks this is set up to make Maobama look like Reagan did during air traffic controller strike.

Don't be surprised if Maobama swoops in at the last minute to save the day

True there too. My daughter has to be at school by 7am, and gets out at 3. That looks like 8 hrs to me, instead of 5.75 hrs. Who knew the teachers were off the clock for 2.25 hrs every school day?
Yea...I have a new teacher in the family, and I was thinking back to my highschool days when the day started at 7, and we got out at 2.

Why would that person go into teaching given the horrible working conditions. Sorry, but I don't buy into this exalted status given to teachers. Fuck em. Parents are far more important in a child's education than teachers

Because for many people, the paycheck is not the sum total of the reason they work. Many people, teachers, social workers, therapists, firemen, cops, and others, do what they do so they can make a difference. That is not to say that the pittance we pay teachers isn't shameful, considering they are one of the big deciding factors in how our futures will be.

No one is downplaying the importance of parents. But those parents are doing what they do for THEIR child. Teachers do it for someone else's children.

The reality is we don't pay them a "pittance", that their unions have negotiated a heavily backend advantage to their contracts doesn't change that teachers after a time make decent money and often outstrip those in private industry with equivalent degrees.

Their unions have negotiated away some current benefits so that they can receive a massive retirement at the back end, as well as pay increases that make it a worthwhile profession after about 12 years where they make equivalent or more than counterparts in the private sector.

The idea that everybody has ignored them for centuries is a bit much. People respect teachers, at least all the people that I choose to hang with do, and wouldn't treat them as crappily as people read about so often when talking about stuff like this.

It is also a myth that none of them get reimbursed for continuing education classes. In almost every school district you fill out forms and as long as it is a requisite course you get reimbursed. Amazingly they also often get to take these courses off on their taxes as well, up to $10,000, but most require only six credit hours over five years and to do the requisite course work you will never spend that much.

They have massive incentive to get their Masters Degree as the pay difference is HUGE at the top end of the scale, therefore most teachers will have one of these...

Even in a poor district, like ours, if you are buying supplies you can fill out reimbursement forms. So far not one of my wife's have been rejected.

Receipts. This is all bullshit

I am not gathering receipts from friends to scan and post on a forum. Don't be ridiculous.

And if you cannot take the word of the media outlets I have listed, perhaps the issue is with you? CNN is part of the conspiracy? The St Augustine local news?

The articles are accurate. If you choose to discount them, find evidence that they are inaccurate.

I stand corrected. I was wrong to call it a pittance. The trick is how to keep teachers in the system for 12 years without them burning out.

Again all bullshit. You clowns always say "teachers don't do it for the money" yet we always hear the greedy fuckers complaining about the money.

Sorry. But they should be getting better outcomes.

Did you know that teaching majors have the lowest SAT scores? Where did this nonsense of worshipping teachers start? It was a noble profession before unions ruined it

Well in a rich state like mine, teachers don't get reimbursed for supplies, so they ask parents for donations.

It must be handy to oversimplify everything. I guess that makes it easier for you to understand.

No, the teachers do not change any of the facts. But they do change how those facts are presented in order to get the students to learn. YOu know what learning is, right? That thing everyone else did and left you behind back in grade school?

I learned it all 60 years ago.....it just ain't workin' today.....kids can't read or write and have HS diplomas....how does that happen.....

who dat say who dat when i say who dat ?....I axe ya....you be hearin' dat........ya unastan wa i's sayin'....

Well in a rich state like mine, teachers don't get re-imbursed for suppies, so they ask parents for donations.

I didn't get reimbursed for supplies at work either.....that would be tools needed to do the work to you pinheads....

With $75 an hour, whats the problem......even at $25 an hour, whats the problem ? They be buyin' the kids laptops.....not....more like ball point pens.....

Ain't Obama giving enough money to the states to supply the basics or does it all go for teachers and administrators salarys ?

You fund your own districts, if you feel they are inadequately funded then change it. Education is a local power, not one of the federal government. There is this document that lists the specific powers of the federal government, Education isn't one of them.

While teachers and districts do sometimes either request fees or donations, it doesn't mean that they cannot be reimbursed for supplies, or even suppies(sic).

170 days....10 days less that the national average

5 hr. 45 min. school day

but regardless.....if those figures are right....is that a fair wage to pay the average teacher....before the cost of benefits.

Do you have any idea how much at-home work teachers put in? There's lesson preparation, theres research, then there is grading work, then there are the kids who stay after school for help, THEN there is qualification study/testing. There are after school meetings with kid's parents, there are after school faculty meetings on policy and agenda, etc. If you really want to be a good teacher, you are working AT LEAST ten hours a day...

ANd for anyone who thinks teachers make god money for what they do then by all funking means, go out and teach junior high for one year and then let's see what you have to say.

Seriously, there are ver FEW jobs that are more important in our society.

In 2010, the Fed.gov. approved $26 billion in aid to school districts and states to prevent large-scale layoffs of teachers and public employees ...that ain't peanuts.
