55 years ago today!

I grew up in Oakland, Ca. It is a city that is over 50% black. It is a City is very liberal politically. No elected Republicans in the City.

In high school I had three black classmates come over to my house and they walked around the back to my basement. Five minutes later the police are at my door and I'm like WTF? My neighbor saw the black kids going around my house and call the cops. This was in Oakland.

Since we were talking soccer earlier go look at the problems in Europe with racism and racist chants at black players.

There used to be very few black players in the UK and there was much racism on the terraces, that was over 20 years ago. The Premier League is now made up of many African players and native born blacks. You need to look further to somewhere like Russia and Eastern Europe where racism is absolutely rampant.

On this day in 1955, Rosa Parks, an African-American, was arrested and charged with violating a Montgomery, Ala., ordinance that required her to relinquish her bus seat to a white passenger. Her act of defiance sparked a yearlong bus boycott in the segregated city. It helped inspire a crusade that led Congress to pass the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which, among other things, bars discrimination in public accommodations.

Parks status as an iconic figure in the civil rights movement began when she was seated in the first row of the rear, which was set aside for blacks. Because the front of the bus was full, the driver demanded that she give up her seat to a white rider. Her failure to do so resulted in a $10 fine, plus an additional $4 in court costs. In 1956, the Supreme Court found the ordinance unconstitutional.

At the time, Parks, a 42-year-old seamstress, served as secretary of the Montgomery chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. She said that she took her action as a private citizen, however, because she was tired of giving in.

After her arrest, the Montgomery department store where she worked fired her. Eventually, Parks moved to Detroit, where she found a similar job. From 1965 to 1988, she was a receptionist for Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.).

On Sept. 9, 1996, President Bill Clinton presented Parks with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the executive branchs highest honor. In 1997, she received a Congressional Gold Medal.

After Parks died on Oct. 24, 2005, her body lay in state in the Rotunda of the U.S. Capitol, where some 50,000 people viewed the casket. She remains the only nongovernmental American to receive this tribute.

Way to go Google!
Isn't it great to know what one person following their conscience can accomplish?

Have you ever had a chance to visit the South? Not to say the South is without problems like anywhere else but there are some of the nicest people you will ever meet who live there. These are people who will kill you with kindness.
That's very true....there are also some ass holes down there would have no problem burning a cross in your yard.

true....but people like rana will always bash the south, while completely ignoring the rampant racism, crime etc....with urban gangs across the nation
Dont forget the segregation. The industrial north is far more segregated now then the south is.

Hey there are mouth breathing red necks in every State of the nation. Hell there are more fucking Rednecks in Ohio then their are people in Alabama. The problem with the south and why they have such a bad reputation is that for many generations they legitimized racism and institutionalized it legally. But you're basic point is correct, those who live in a glass house shouldn't throw any rocks.

While there may be some validity to this, it would hold more water if the same people walking by were the same group for both scenarios.

I've got a little tidbit for you.

Quite a few years ago; I was walking up one night to a local store and when I was walking up, I noticed three your "gentlemen" standing around in the little parking lot.
As I was leaving, all three "gentlemen" were making some really sexual comments to any woman that walked by, regardless of age.

I got home, 2 1/2 blocks away, and called our local Police Department. Explained what was happening and when asked for a description, I told them the approximate age, what they were wearing, and when asked for their ethinicity, I said that two appeared to be Black and 1 Hispanic.

Police came, arrested all three "gentlemen", and in the process it was reported that all three began fighting with the Police and kicked out a window of one the Police cars.

A few months later I got a phone call from a Prosecuter and was asked if I coiuld come down and give a statement.
I said sure and set an appointment. Went to the office and recounted my recollection of the incident.
The Prosecuter then told me that the "gentlemen's: lawyer wanted to know if I would answer a few questions; but that I didn't have to, if I didn't want to.
I told him that I had no problem with it and he had his secretary send in the lawyer.

This guy walks in and sees me. :chesh:
6ft white guy, dressed all in black, with long hair and a beard down to mid chest.
Asked a few questions and then the ball dropped.
He wanted to know if I would know why the dispatcher said that I had called in that 3 black kids were harrassing white women, as they walked by.
I told him that I would have no idea why the dispatcher would say so; because I reported that the 3 were making rude comments to any woman that passes by.

The the ball hit the floor; because his very next question was:
"Did it make a difference to you, that 2 of the boys were black and 1 was mexican."
Looked him dead in the eye and said: "NO; because I was married to a Hispanic woman, had relatives that were both Mexican and Black and mixed".
He shut his case, said thank you, and then left.
Looked over at the Prosecuter, with a "what the fuck" look on my face, and he was holding his head in his hand, like this ---> :palm:
When he finally looked up, he was smiling and shaking his head.
He said that he knew their Attorney was going to try and place the race card; but he couldn't say anything to me about it.
We started talking about my little town being kind of small and everyone pretty much knowing where everyone else lived or how to find someone.
He said that he would make sure that all three defendents were aware that if I received any problems, that they would be the first ones that would be thought of.
With that I left.

About a month later I received a phone call from the Prosecuter and he said all three had taken the offered plea bargain and to call him if I had any problems with anything that might be connected to this.

There were a lot of people that saw what was going on and I'm the only one that took a stand and said anything and the first thing that is tried, is to make it look like I'm some kind of racist.

Good for you, bad behavior needs to be put into check no matter where it comes from or who!

I have been to Virginia and Maryland but have never been to the Deep South. Trouble is though, you are white and you might have a different experience if you were black, brown, green or blue in somewhere like Alabama or Georgia. Of course, it is easily solved by Webbway telling us which region he lives in, but I know that he won't as he just loves being an anonymous wanker.

Once again, the same can be said for other parts of the country as well.

Of course everyone loves to focus on the civil rights atrocities in the past, but ignores the current reality of the south.

Touched a little nerve, I am sorry that the people of the South are prejudice. I think you realize this as well and why your dander is up over it.

I do ignore web's posts, but happened to see them due to the response by others.

And I was referring to loyal and the other one, and not you, but for some reason, you took umbrage! and saw yourself in the post! Sorry about that!

Having travelled and worked all over the country, I feel I have seen a fair amount of the different areas and cultures. I also think my experiences disagree with you here.

In the south you are more likely to find people who will make bad jokes and noise about other races, but get along well with those same races they talk about.

In the north you are more likely to hear all inclusive conversations, but people get beaten to death for walking thru the wrong neighborhood. And not necessarily a bad neighborhood.

The racist klan types are an extreme minority in the south today. The problem is that too many people rely on old stereotypes and sensationalistic tabloid journalism to give them their information.

Welcome to my world. You see, it doesn't matter if the racism was 20 or 30 or 40 years ago. If the stereotype is created it stays.

I doth my bowler hat to you, sir, and offer you a nice cup of tea, a warm beer or a hearty meal of boiled lard. Furthermore, should you ever be in the vicinity, i would be delighted to escort you on a tour of the North Yorkshire Moors to witness the very rare sight of the last surviving breeding pair of dentists in the UK.

;)

Thanks Charver!

By the same token, I tip my oil stained NASCAR ball cap to you and offer you a budweiser, a dip of skoal, and some fried chicken. If you ever make it down to the southern USA, I'll be happy to show you both our paved roads and introduce you to my wife/cousin. Maybe we can go out later and burn a few crosses, lynch a nigger or two, and I can teach you how to put a 4 foot lift kit in a '79 chevy pickup.

Ain't stereotypes fun?
