These are guardsmen dude. They need work ups and security training. I'd consider the time table to be pretty expedient to be honest. Most of the time our reservists spend about 4-8 months doing work ups.

I took the President 18 freakin' months to finally get a clue thats its HIS job to protect the borders...guess we can give the guards 4 months....
but they should have been already trained to do their jobs...like shoot first then ask questions.

None of the Guardsmen is trained for border security. For their own safety, the safety of their unit, and the safety of those they will be guarding against, they have to have training.

Also, the desert environment is a hostile place to work. Getting trained for that takes time as well.

The more time they spend sweating, the less time they spend bleeding.
