524 Guard soldiers headed to Arizona-Mexico border

PHOENIX – Federal officials told Arizona's attorney general and a congresswoman Monday that 524 of the 1,200 National Guard troops headed to the U.S.-Mexico border will be deployed in the state by August or September.

U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and Attorney General Terry Goddard, both Democrats, met with Obama administration officials in Tucson along with dozens of law enforcement officials and community leaders. The federal officials included John Brennan, deputy national security adviser for homeland security.

Giffords spokesman C.J. Karamargin said the 524 troops are being trained for deployment in August, and Goddard said two drone aircraft also will be used in Arizona. Goddard called the commitment a first step.

These are guardsmen dude. They need work ups and security training. I'd consider the time table to be pretty expedient to be honest. Most of the time our reservists spend about 4-8 months doing work ups.

i understand...but the fact our country has no soldiers we can immediately deploy to the border is disturbing....there should be guys ready 24/7

As Billy noted, its standard procedure. Now, every time the call goes out for Guardsmen to come to the border (ala Calif a few years ago), a bunch of bored troops volunteer and go down. They are highly motivated, but they also need reminding that its not a fucking vacation (for the most part). Also, they come from numerous fields such as finance, personnel, electronics, geek support, engineering, supply, loading, and whatnot...

How long's it take to teach a guy not to let no illegals cross a patch of desert?

They have to learn how to say, in Spanish,:
"Please don't shoot me, I have no bullets in my rifle."

Without violating LOAC, getting injured, losing his barings, and a whole host of things I'm not even anticipating here? Not too long, though, I should think...

Well hell, if he's afeared of losing his barings he ought not bring em in the first instance. Don't need to train a feller to leave his shit at home.

Don't forget annual training. That's a solid week of DBPP.

Well, annual training week is a solid week, but Guardsmen are typically required to do 15 days of annual training. My annual training week actually got deleted this year, partly due to budgeting constraints. They are relying on Guardsmen writing off the other 10 days and just paying them for unit training every month...
