45% pay no income tax

Oh, those poor people in the top 20%. Having to pay 80% of taxes, and only because they're receiving 90% or so of the total income in the economy! Boo fucking hoo! Cry me a river!

You are seriously getting mad at them because they're too poor to even qualify for paying income taxes? How is that their fault?

Would you say a family of four with 2 adults and 2 children where the gross family income is $48,000 is poor?

45% OF AMERICANS PAY NO FEDERAL INCOME TAX... http://www.marketwatch.com/story/45-of-americans-pay-no-federal-income-tax-2016-02-24

Shocking ! Deadbeat traitors !

Well, well, well.

What's shocking is the ignorance you decided to quote.

According to the article in your own link, "An estimated 45.3% of American households — roughly 77.5 million [people] — will pay no federal individual income tax..."

There is a difference between an "American Household" and an "American," and the actual number shows right there in the article: 77.5 million people.

That works out to be 24.302289118846033% of the population of the US, NOT 45%.

Now, let's take that 24.302289118846033% and consider that roughly half don't have any taxable income (which includes children not old enough to work, those on Social Security who don't earn in excess of their established income limit), and then factor in the fact that people who meet the taxable requirements DO pay income tax during the year, they just get some (or all) of it back at the end of the year - during which time the government has use of that money.

Then consider how much the government decides is "taxable." If you're earning less than $5,700.00 a year, your income is not taxable. And if you're earning less than $5,700.00 a year you're probably a kid, one of the mentally disabled that fell through the cracks, elderly and scraping because Social Security isn't enough, or have a very lo level of education. And I have to tell you, that's not the fault of all the people earning less than $5,700.00 a year. Some, perhaps, but not all.

But the real point of this post is to call bullshit.

Less than half of the people (less than 25%) both you and that article say don't pay income taxes actually don't, and many of them simply either earn nothing or less than $5,700.00 a year.

Because of these flaws the article is, to use the parlance of the street, bullshit.

So the liberal Tax Policy Center put out a bullshit study you claim?

""The bottom line: out of 171.3 million tax units this year, 77.5 million—or 45.3 percent—won’t pay income tax.""

That's not what the headline of the OP says, nor of the originally-linked article. It says "45% of Americans Pay No Income Tax." It doesn't say, "45% of eligible taxpayers don't pay income tax." There's a big difference.

And again, you're ignoring the fact that even the TPC says "American Households," not "Americans."

The TPC also goes on to say, "But that doesn’t mean more Americans have moved off the tax rolls. Instead, the higher estimate reflects new and better estimates of the number of Americans who don’t file tax returns. Those additional non-payers were there all the time—we just failed to count them."

And even further, the number includes all people "who do not file," but doesn't specify whether or not they SHOULD file and don't.

In addition, it gives the estimated number of "tax units." That number is 171 million. There are 318 million Americans, according to the latest census. So now we're talking percentages of percentages.

They go on to say, "We still project that the percentage of non-payers will fall over time, though more slowly than we previously thought."

And most telling of all: "Our estimates count non-filers as paying no income tax but that’s almost certainly not right. Some may have had taxes withheld during the year that they could get back if they filed returns—or maybe wouldn’t get back if they in fact owed tax. We assume that people who don’t file don’t owe tax but some surely do. We just don’t know."

I'm an Independent, not a liberal or conservative, and I don't give a rat's ass if it's a liberal or conservative outlet. Some of you people don't seem to have copped on to that fact, yet.

The article is bullshit, regardless who published it. They use statistics that are guesses, then come right out and say they don't know.

And, finally, they say:

Just because people don’t pay federal income tax doesn’t mean they don’t pay any tax. In fact, nearly everyone pays something. Three-fifths of those who don’t owe income tax work and thus pay Social Security and Medicare payroll taxes. And almost everyone pays state and local sales taxes, excise taxes, or some other levy.

The article is bullshit. (mic drop)
