I was going to make a long personal post about my family and their experience in the US, but instead I will just say this:

I think people can reasonably see some silver lining in the present even when viewed through the darkest cloud of the past.

The modern black man needs to be neither bitter or angry about his ancestors being brought here in slave ships-nor must he be grateful because it means he is here now. He can be both burdened with the suffering of his ancestors and the struggles that being black have meant, as well as be grateful that he lives in a country that allows him to fight injustice and realize the changes wrought by his struggles.
