2018 was a particularly tough year for farmers, leaving their futures uncertain

Now we’re going into the new year, tariffs still have our prices down and we have to go to a bank to borrow money on a farm showing a loss. We’re not bankable," one farmer said.

The longtime farmer owns 6,000 acres on which he produced approximately 450,000 bushels this past year. But, because of falling prices directly driven by President Donald Trump’s trade wars, Neblett faces two unpleasant choices: He can either take a massive loss by accepting the bailout money that the White House offered as part of a $12 billion package to farmers — an opportunity the administration capped at $125,000 per farmer — or face an inhospitable market price at a two-decade low.

Neblett said some of his neighbors on smaller farms were able to recoup their losses through the bailout, but his decision to take the bailout money meant that he "lost his shirt."

Lol, as if libs give a shit about farmers. You love to take their wealth away from their heirs, and drive them away from farming. Shut the fuck up.

They refer to farmers/rural folk as uneducated deplorable hillbillies, don't they? They probably think farmers plant the same crop year after year in the same fields and weather has no effect on yields.

sounds as if someone has been boning up on his 19th century literature! bravo! Howard Pyle deserves credit for bringing those stories up to date.

Me and the missus are going to a Danish bar/restaurant in Pattaya tomorrow for Xmas dinner, should be interesting.

Have a nice time.
My mother and I are going to my cousin's at lunch time, then I'm going to the GF's sister's for dinner on Christmas. I'm gonna be stuffed!

Government shutdown: How small businesses are hurt

The partial government shutdown, which began at midnight Saturday, is likely to affect millions of small businesses.

While 800,000 government workers brace for temporary financial losses, many of the roughly 30 million small businesses nationwide face revenue losses and limited access to certain loans.

Because the Trump administration and Congress were unable to reach a long-term funding agreement that includes President Trump's proposed $5 billion border wall, any small business owner who was banking on quick assistance from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) will be out of luck.

"Due to the lapse of government funding, SBA will remain inactive until further notice. We apologize for any inconveniences and we look forward to assisting you when we return," the agency posted on Facebook.

And Clinton effectively kid tobacco farming. Mono-cropping comes with risks.

Oh, shit...that looks so damn good, RB. My mouth is watering. I would love that today.

But we are having dinner at the in-laws...and that means roast beef for Christmas...which almost certainly will be "left to rest" for way too long. (I'd much prefer another turkey...but that never happens. And neither does a delicious ham.)

Oh, well. Maybe for Easter...the ham. I actually prefer the butt end...because the bone is essential to a decent bean soup later.
