There's no question that the democrat would lose in a two-way race .. but you're missing the point. The interesting dynamic is not between the candidates, but the fighting for control that is going on within the Republican Party.

The Republicans do not have two canidates.. One is a nominee of the Tea Party.

I do not belive it is healthy to have two liberal canidates for the same seat, I do belive it is healthy to have differing opinions within the party that foster a healthy debate.
