$2.4 Trillion Would Be Largest Debt-Limit Increase in U.S. History

he bill to increase the federal debt limit that has been put before Congress today would increase that limit by up to $2.4 trillion, which would be the largest increase in the debt limit in U.S. history by a margin of half a trillion dollars, according to records published by the Government Accountability Office and the Congressional Research Service.

In fact, according to records published by the Congressional Research Service, if the current bill is passed and the debt limit is increased by $2.4 trillion, the two largest debt-limit increases in U.S. history would come in back-to-back years, both during the presidency of Barack Obama.

Up until now, the largest increase in the debt limit was the $1.9 trillion increase passed by Congress and signed by President Obama on Feb. 12, 2010. That law increased the debt limit from $12.394 trillion to $14.294 trillion.

I'm sure liberals will find a way to blame Bush for this, despite that it happened solely on President Obama's watch. This also happened while the GOP controlled the house, however, as we have seen from the derisive comments from the left, the GOP has no power and when they try and provide a debt solution bill, it is mocked as DOA because it won't pass the liberal senate and white house. Sorry liberals, you cannot blame Bush for this, the responsible lies largely with President Obama and the liberals in the senate.

Well, for the biggest spender ever, you need the biggest increases ever! Why do you hate America?

;)

You think it is "good" news? What, or are you saying that increasing the limit is "bad" news? I'm not sure what your point is here other than a really crappy attempt at ad hominem attack. I blamed Bush for overspending, I blame this President for it too.

Do you remember Obama promising not to spend on supplementals? Do you remember how he told us that there would be "change" in Washington? Well, I guess there is more unemployment in the State of Washington but somehow I don't believe that is the change he portrayed....

My favorite kool aid he peddled in his bid for president was how he was "going to cut the budget with a scalpel".

Well, maybe it's possible Onceler saw your crappy attempt at an ad hom in post #2 and said "what the hey"! If the high and might Dalai Damo thinks ad homs are called for...

I seriously doubt that, considering I posted with the winky we've all used to signify we are either joking or throwing out sarcasm.

Stop interfering, Onceler is his own man and can handle himself without help from the "sisters"...

What do you think about the subject of this thread? So far, all the liberals have avoided it like the plague and stuck to ad homs.

Excellent OP! Two thumbs up! Four Stars!

I was watching the tube yesterday, and they had some lib-dem yahoo up there... don't ask me who, they all sound the same... and he was defending this debt ceiling increase by pointing to "39 times we raised it under Bush... 18 under Clinton... all without this fanfare..." And that was his rationale! Because Congress has raised the DEBT CEILING 57 times before here recently, and no one complained.... why is it suddenly wrong?

I mean seriously? Really? This is where we've gotten to? It's such a 7-year-old type argument, isn't it? But mommy, I always have 57 grams of sugar for breakfast.......

We need to bring these liberal dimwits together in a room and have a seminar about what the "Debt Ceiling" is... what those words mean... I think they must not comprehend that a "ceiling" is supposed to be the limit, the most, the cap... Increasing it, should be an oxymoron... there is no increasing the ceiling! It's the ceiling... it's the most... the max... no further limit exists! I mean, what the fuck is wrong with these people, that they don't get that??? What does "debt ceiling" even mean, if every time we reach it, we just raise it... and complain if there is any fanfare about that! Instead of exploring how utterly incompetent and foolish it is to even be discussing raising the debt ceiling, we are all.. left and right... falling all over ourselves to explain why it has to be done. Me included! I posted a thread the other day about an argument FOR raising the debt ceiling, purely political, purely based on what helped the GOP in defeating Obama for 2012, but damn if I don't think Bachmann is 100% right on this... we shouldn't even be entertaining this idiocy of increasing the debt ceiling. We should be cutting spending to bring our debt below the ceiling... that's the purpose of the ceiling... that's how it is supposed to work. But on Capitol Hill, the word "cut" means a reduction in the rate of increase in something... it doesn't really mean "CUT!"

Maybe we need a bigger room for the seminar?

"on Capitol Hill, the word "cut" means a reduction in the rate of increase in something... it doesn't really mean "CUT!"

Most people with any inkling of economics understand population & COL increases.

Here is an analogy even a simple minded right winger 'might' understand.

President Obama was handed the keys to a car named econ(omy). His predecessor was handed the same keys 8 years earlier. His predecessor got a car in absolutely mint condition, not a scratch, dent or blemish. The tank was full, the fluids were pristine and the car was clean and polished.

When Obama got the keys, the car had been rammed into a tree, left in a ditch and totaled. There was not a panel that was not dented, scratched or damaged. The tank was empty, the fluids were sludge black and nothing worked, not even the cigarette lighter.

Now, President Obama would have loved to just add his own brand of gas & oil and driven it down the highway system built in the 50's. But with the trashed shape it was in he wishes he could have traded it in for a new car, but the country only has ONE. So he will have to spend more than it is worth to fix it. Plus, his predecessor's buddies don't want Obama to fix the car and get credit for restoring it, so every chance they get they take a sledgehammer to the car.

I heard Ray McGovern, a retired CIA agent whose expertise was the old Soviet Union and the Eastern Bloc countries say the propaganda coming out of Fox News is at the same level as Pravda. But I suspect most Russians knew Pravda was propaganda.

My translation was for the OP, not for Damo's response.

How did I credit republicans? Are you suggesting that President Obama and democrats are not largely responsible for the increase in debt? I know your style is to lie, but I would like you to address the issue in a forthright manner. Thank you.

so was it the population or cost of living that increased 33% under Obama?........

he then drove it over a cliff.....

And yet; it appears that the Democrats are accepting of the fact that the American people were lied to, all for the sake of winning the Office of the Presidency.
