It's about keeping the slim majority. Santos lied his way into a seat in a Blue district. The governor's race brought a lot of loons out to the polls that year. The special election will be very different.

There's a federal investigation going on and he'll be charged if he hasn't already. I'm fine with booting him. The House has the power, but I don't think it's cowardly to wait to see how the federal case goes.

I suspect it is more about his own criminality and fear that he will be treated the same way.

The fact that he lied to his voters, while not a crime, is a terrible violation of ethics. There is no shame in ridding your club/party/group/company of an unethical, shameless grifter. Sadly some Republicans can't understand that.

If he were not gay, then almost all Republicans would have voted against expelling him. Republicans stick together with other Republicans, no matter what crime, as long as they are not gay.

I think we can agree that there were so many crimes uncovered by the ethics investigation, this was a no brainer.

If, like the criminal Menendez it was one issue, the majority in Congress would prefer to wait.

Santos is a grifter and a liar. There was really no reason to wait.

That is not how it works. The House takes care of ethics violations. Ethics are not the same as breaking laws. The House has its own rules which Santos was breaking. There was no reason to take him to court, or let alone wait for the court to decide about House ethics.
If he gets charged by the election commissions, he will face the law for breaking regulations and corruption.

If Santos had not been gay, the results would have been more like the trump impeachments. Maybe one or two Republicans would have voted for removal, but not many.

Whatever else Santos is guilty of, he is openly gay, which is a crime in many Republicans' books.
