I have always been puzzled by the very idea of a "hate crime".......is it necessary to have an ability to punish people more severely than is possible for "merely" murdering somebody?.......

No. Court-clogging Kabuki theater bullshit. It was supposed to be the foot in the door for "hatespeech" laws. That got shut down pretty quick in America.

They managed to get the "hatespeech" laws in Canada and the UK, though.

Now they can go to jail for saying things like "Trudeau is Castro's bastard". Ok, maybe not that; Idk what they are.
