Calf Canyon/Hermits Peak Fire now largest wildfire in state history

The teams battling the Calf Canyon/Hermits Peak Fire said Monday morning that the blaze has grown to more than 298,000 acres, making it the largest wildfire in New Mexico history.

It took just 40 days for the wildfire to achieve that dubious distinction, chasing thousands of people from their homes and destroying more than 580 structures and at least 170 homes.

Firefighters have had recent success in limiting its explosive growth, but it continues to rage and threaten more communities with additional evacuations issued on Sunday in San Miguel and Taos counties.

This is looking like a bad year in the West. Not just the dry conditions, but eco terrorists lighting fires has become a massive problem.

I am very glad that I put in AC last year, it really helps with keeping the smoke out of the house, which a few years ago caused Lord S a lot of problems.

Their incompetence/negligence has been a problem to be sure.

As of Monday morning, the Calf Canyon/Hermits Peak Fire had burned 298,060 acres, growing by 9,118 from the previous day. It was 27% contained, down from 36% on Sunday.

At more than 465 square miles, it’s the largest wildfire currently burning in the country. Management of the fire has been turned over to three separate teams.

As a socialist I am not opposed to government, but I am very hostile towards low quality government. The Us Forest Service has been a wreck for decades. Congress is fully aware, but they never do anything about it, because that would be actual work, and they are not interested in that....at all.

If you are one of that roughly 16%, I'd suggest moving if you are in a blue state that prevents you from doing anything to protect your property. If you aren't, I suggest you get roof sprinklers and have a water supply available to protect your property.

Those represent about a 95% reduction in chances your house burns to the ground in a wildfire.

No. sorry, I am in new mexico

choose poorly and accept the reality of your bad decisions.

dont buy property below sea level, prone to wildfire, prone to tornados, prone to hurricanes.

Have you taken a fucking look at the Drought Monitor lately?

So? In New Mexico or Arizona, you can collect rainwater and have between 2,000 and 3,000 gallons off a house in the course of a year. All you need is a tank to store it. Now you have your firefighting water for those sprinklers.

New Mexico is so fucking dry, and the rains dont tend to come till July....this might be a huge problem.
