Obama's gay marriage gamble

When I 1st saw the big announcement, I figured it was a political calculation, and something that they arrived at after tons of internal polling and other factors that led them to believe this would give him a leg up in the election. Because that's basically what Presidents do.

After seeing the aftermath, I have come to the conclusion that they either miscalculated in a huge way, or that it wasn't calculated at all. James Carville practically lost it; it was addressed negatively in churches all across America this past Sunday; polls are pretty mixed, and he has alienated some voters who are in the Dem base as a result.

I think Obama deserves some props on this one. His comments indicated that it's something that he has been considering for awhile, but that Biden's comments basically gave him the impetus to move forward. Politically, it seems like an insanely stupid move, but principle-wise, it's unusual for a Prez to take this kind of risk in an election year.

the truth is now sniping? i already created a thread about this same exact topic and you did nothing but attack me for it.

last week you're a hack if you believe gay marriage is an issue....this week...it is an issue and worthy of a thread.

LOL

onceler can't remember a thread he posted numerous posts in.............5 days ago

but romney is lying about not remembering something from 50 years ago

LMAO

seriously? onceler is butt hurt about sniping?

tell me...what is it you want to discuss onceler? we discussed this very same issue last week and you called me a hack for saying obama gambled with the gay marriage move. now...all of a sudden, you have this novel idea that obama gambled with the gay marriage move....and you expect this thread to be taken serious?

weird.

No - you posted a cut & paste which you thought was a "gotcha," because you couldn't read & comprehend what I wrote about gay marriage being a non-issue for the executive branch of gov't.

And I continued to try to explain that to you on your cut & paste thread. But apparently, it didn't sink in. Thus the sniping.

your revisionist history is truly laughable. i created that thread after i gave you my opinion about his gamble. i created it to show you that i was not alone or hackish in my idea about his gamble. but do go ahead and pretend i never gave you my opinion first and then made the thread to show you how stupid you really are.

I am wondering if this isn't going to help him with younger voters - the ones who do most of the ground work in an election. I think it will. Still and all I always thought he put a couple of swing states at risk.

He had no choice but to declare. Biden forced the issue, and unless Obama wanted this to be 'birth certificate 2.0', he was wise to put it to rest. Otherwise, it would be the question that he kept hearing right through Oct.

Now it's out there. Eventually people will decide whether a Pres. who believes the Constitution applies to all people is better suited to run the country than a Pres. who believes profit trumps all.

All anyone has to do is remember that nothing gets through Congress anymore, so the chances of a natl. gay marriage bill is not likely.

I know that 1st part is the narrative, and Biden even apologized, but it doesn't really compute with me. Obama had other options; he certainly could have spun it as Joe having his own personal views, but that there is a difference between admin policy and personal views.

Not the point. It became the topic d'jour, and Obama was going to be pressed on it. Biden simply hastened the process, which was a blessing in disguise. It's out there now, instead of August/Sept.

The smoke will clear, and people will realize that the Earth is safely spinning on its axis. We know that the republican base will either not vote, or vote for Romney.

The issue is the clear minded voters.

There is one thing we can always count on from Barack Obama, and that is he will say & do whatever it takes to help him win 4 more years in the WH.

and that is different from any other president.........how?
I don't know that it is different from any other president. You do agree that some presidents were more "say anything" than others, yes? My impression of Obama is that he is the greatest "say anything" president of them all.

If that were the case, he'd have denounced gay marriage, or said it was 'up to the states to decide'.

No, he stated he was for civil unions, as that was a safe answer at the time. Now that his back is against the wall, he's all for it because he thinks that will help energize his base.
