Socialist Hollande defeats conservative Nicolas Sarkozy to be France's president

"Just imagine what would happen here if we told everyone they could retire on government pensions at the age of 60.

Umm, the job market would open up dramatically for recent college grads? So you'd have 60 yo's on SS, and young people at work.

Yeah, that would be terrible. Imagine how it would decimate consumer spending...

Um... we can't afford to pay for people retiring at 65-70, let alone adding an additional five years of benefits onto the debt.

lmao... sad is that your spend spend spend way has been tried and is what brought us to this point. It is the very point that you continue to fail to grasp. Sooner or later... you have to actually PAY.

Going to a Mitterand disciple is pretty much the beginning of the end of the Euro. The 'tax the rich' campaign goes into effect soon. Couple that with the removal of any semblance of responsibility and you can kiss French capital goodbye. Like I stated, you 'me me me' idiots are the downfall. One of the austerity measures they hate so much is pushing retirement out to 62 instead of 60. those measures do not affect the economy today... yet the me me me idiots continue to object to such changes. They could care less if their country can actually afford it. Just imagine what would happen here if we told everyone they could retire on government pensions at the age of 60.

The beginning of the end of the Euro? Where the fuck have you been for the past year or two? The beginning of the end happened a long long time ago.

lmao... yet your spend spend spend friends have been trying so very hard to throw money at the problem thinking it will work. The Euro had a chance to survive until Greece and France decided they would rather blow up the Euro and go back to their own currencies. As soon as they do, they will devalue them. No doubt helping countless low and middle class people. Nothing says fuck you to the poor like making their money worth less. But that is how it ends with your spend spend spend types. Oh, just devalue. That makes the debt worth less. Then they can justify spending more more more. Right Dung?

So is this anti-incumbent or pro-liberal?

Anti-incumbent, I'd say. Hollande is a more personally likeable guy than Sarkozy, and Sarkozy has been wildly unpopular. But even in spite of that, the election was fairly close. I think voters were nervous about electing a socialist. I hope they're prepared for a lost decade.

You are so out of touch with reality it is impossible to even begin to address this nonsense.

LOL... poor Dung... reality does have a way of escaping you. Are you going to tell us that it wasn't the constant overspending that led to the debt problem? Really?

Are you going to pretend that once the Euro dissolves that countries like Greece, Italy, Spain, France etc... won't devalue their currency to alleviate their debt problems? You master of faux-Keynesian theory, Krugman, already spouted off that nonsense.

Hey, in 2007, the year before the (prior) recession, did Spain run a budget deficit or surplus?

If the Euro dissolves, the countries that can't borrow will inflate. What the hell else are they going to do? It's not rocket surgery, SF.

Tell me what did they actually do? Budgets are pointless if you don't stick to them. Just look at the US. The mythological surpluses your ilk constantly proclaim we had... nothing more than fairy tales.

LMAO... and what do you think that will do Mr. 'austerity is hurting people'? Ya think that is going to help the average person out? To immediately lose 20-50% of their buying power and asset valuation?

Dear Dung a currency devaluation hammers the poor and middle classes. The rich will be long gone by the time it happens. They will be protected for the most part.

The poor and middle class don't tend to have the ability to hedge against it.

Greece and others was given access to cheap credit by virtue of joining the Euro, Germany gained tremendously from this which is why they have such high surpluses.

Incorrect. Spain had actual budget surpluses in 2005, 2006 and 2007 after running modest deficits from 2000-2004. Not fairy tales. Actual budget surpluses.

I'm not an advocate of dissolving the Euro, so I don't see your point here, SF. If the Euro dissolves, the countries that cannot borrow will have to inflate. Like I said, not rocket surgery.
