There was overt hate and lynchings throughout the 60's - a mere 40+ years ago, not 60. And yeah - that's recent; there are a LOT of people still alive from that era, if you're not aware.

I don't think you understand what these kinds of terms & words mean to the generation of blacks that grew up & were alive during that time. They are symbolic reminders of the violence & fear that their parents & grandparents had to live through (or die through, in some cases). To me, it's just sensitivity to understand what those words mean, and not use them casually as a result. I also don't go up to overweight people and say "you sure are fat."
