Is the rightwing gun-buying fear frenzy racist?

When it became clear in the early fall of 2008 that Barack Obama, son of a Kansan and a Kenyan, would be the 44th President of the United States, many citizens rushed to their gun shops, stocked up on ammo and camo, and tried to fortify their nests with all manner of lethal weapons.


Obama, to a certain kind of person, appeared to be a grave threat to the Second Amendment.


Into the early months of the Obama presidency gun sales went though the roof.


A nation of at least 200 million firearms reached for ever more, in a hurry and a frenzy.


And then, nothing.


No legislation.


No speeches about the ubiquity of guns in the most violent of Western democracies.


Obama actually increased gun rights, signing a bill with a rider that allows people to pack loaded and concealed heat in national parks.


Even after the slaughter in Tucson in January of 2011, when six people were killed and 13 wounded, including Representative Gabrielle Giffords, in a madman's spree, Obama did nothing to keep guns out of the hands of those at the margins of sanity.

There's no serious case that President Obama is trying to take people's guns.


Guess what grade the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence gave Obama after one year in office?


He got an "F" for his gun stance, or lack of same.


This, after the N.R.A. predicted that he would be the most anti-gun president in history.

So if Obama for some reason wins a second term, what makes you think he won't go after gun rights?

Looking at his past broken promises, sheds light on the man.

Obama's heavily publicized and widely praised promise to respect state medical marijuana laws has recently been shattered into more pieces than the campaign can count.

In only a few short months, the Obama administration has presided over a vicious series of political assaults on medical marijuana patients and providers across the nation, carried out by numerous federal agencies. The situation just continues to get more ugly and insane from one week to the next:


  • Federal prosecutors have threatened to arrest state employees for administering state laws, resulting in stalled programs and reduced patient access.
  • U.S. Attorneys in California recently revived the Bush era tactic of threatening to seize property from landlords who rent to medical marijuana facilities.
  • After 9 years of failing to respond, the DEA recently denied a petition to reschedule marijuana, ignoring a vast body of scientific evidence proving the drug's medical efficacy.
  • Federal threats have caused numerous banks to close the accounts of businesses that provide medical marijuana to qualified patients.
  • The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms issued a surprising statement that medical marijuana patients may not purchase firearms.
  • The IRS is shaking down medical marijuana providers for millions of dollars based on an obscure tax provision aimed at drug traffickers.
  • A federal prosecutor even threatened to target newspapers that run ads for medical marijuana services.
  • And, of course, the DEA continues to raid tax-paying businesses that are legal under state law.
 
Left with nothing to fear but imaginary fear itself, the gun nuts are in a terrible rut.


They need scary opposition in order to flourish.


They need someone to hate.


They need conspiracies.


And, as always, they need donations.


So, in their world, Obama's silence, his reticence, his passivity is proof of a grand scheme.

President Obama is a perfect boogieman for that particular mindset.

Muslim or not, he remains a scary Black man in the White House. The intensity of the hatred that some have for him is clinical in many cases. And the pukes are proud for that. They play it like a poorly tuned violin. :)

It's ok...I could have sworn Bush was the Antichrist. And then I thought it was Dick Cheney. And then Karl Rove...
 
It's not a racist reaction, it's a sales gimic. It's like the security stores that show you all these crime statistics and ask you if you feel safe in your neighborhood. They want to sell things, this is a way to do so.

Are you saying it's the P.T. Barnum concept that there is a fool born every minute? Holy shit!!!!! And they're out there buying guns!?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!
