The key word there would be "voluntarily" and it would be a request not a demand.

Obama supposedly wants to use the force of government to force "them" to do what he supposedly believes is "right", but unwilling to do himself, that is a demand.

So, Bush SHOULD have gone to Iraq w/ a musket before ordering the troops there, because he thought it was right.

You are still missing 2 things, completely, by a wide margin: the difference between collective action & individual action, and the fact that paying a higher tax individually is not in & of itself a "good."

Actually, my musket analogy was the equivalent - because individual action in that case would be just as empty symbolically and ineffective as Obama paying more taxes himself. That's where the whole collective action thing comes in.

With your NATO analogy, an equivalent might be if Obama was trying to get a group of people in his bracket to voluntarily pay more, but didn't himself.

It's not a failed analogy. The only way an invasion or military action works is w/ the collective - with a certain # of men & resources from the military. By Damo's assertion, if you think something is "right," you should do it yourself first to lead, even if it is entirely ineffectual.

The only way people in higher brackets paying more taxes works toward the goal Obama has in mind is if they all do it. His paying on his own would be just as ineffectual. Collective action is needed.

And you are not getting the leadership thing. I understand that you want to give him a pass, it's natural. Even though you aren't voting for him it is in your nature to defend him in all things. This isn't really that big of a deal, just an example of how he leads through force and not by example and will only do what he believes is "right" when he is forced to do it.
