The Masters, Augusta National and Women

Have any women on the board followed this issue with Augusta National and the new female CEO of IBM? The cliff notes version is Augusta National has an all male membership of around 300 members I believe. IBM is one of three or four sponsors of the The Masters (which starts today) and the last four IBM CEO's have received a membership to Augusta National. The new IMB CEO is a female and she has not been asked to join (at least yet).

There have been calls for sponsors to boycott The Masters however Augusta National could run the tournament profitably without any sponsors so that threat doesn't carry a lot of weight like it would many other places.

I was more curious to the women's opinion on the board although anyone is welcome to respond. Does an all male (golf) club offend you? Does it offend you at a high profile venue like Augusta National with its very powerful/successful membership?

I've been watching the Masters for years, and didn't know they were an all-male club until that story broke.

They're a private club & can do what they want, of course, but I do think it makes them look pretty old & out of it...

I don't understand at all their reluctance to admit women to Augusta National. Golf is a pussy sport after all.

That's not true. You can't do just what ever you want because you are a private club. You still must obey the law of the land and if the law prohibits discrimination based on gender than Augusta National has an obligation to obey the law. They used to be an ALL WHITE MALE club until the courts ruled that it was unlawful to discriminate in a private club membership based on race.

Is that true of gender? You can't have an all-female or male club in America?

That would seem a bit ridiculous...

Where are you getting the courts forced Augusta National to accept a black member?

There are 24 (to my knowledge) male only golf courses in the U.S. They are not illegal. They are private clubs.

Mott's speaking out of his *ss on this one. You are allowed to have private male and female clubs in this country.

That's a good point. I don't know specifically what the gender discrimination laws are. Still, who wants to belong to a club with a bunch of fat rich pussies?

I didn't deny that. I said that a private club can't do just what ever it wants because it's a private club. They have to obey the laws that prohibit certain types of discrimination.

My main point is that since golfers are a bunch of pussies anyways isn't it hyporcitical as hell for them not to permit female members?

I stand corrected. Federal law only protects against discrimination in public accomodations.

Yes it offends me. It also makes them look like PMP - old and out of it. They probably all sit around talking about how they got their wives to say yes to sex last month and then one guy tells a story about a friend of a friend who knows a friend who knows a woman who claims to want and enjoy sex and they all gasp. I don't watch golf and can't really do anything about it. Its time will come as well. Probably pretty soon now.

You've opened a can of worms here, Onecell....

Can't you have an all black Miss America Contest and an all black College...????

Don't they have all female schools ?

Shouldn't boys be able to join the Girl Scouts ?

Can white Dem. congressmen join the Democratic Black Caucus....?

Can't women use the "men's toilet"....???
