A Florida police department, relenting to massive public pressure, is releasing parts of the 911 tapes recorded the night an unarmed 17-year-old boy was shot dead outside his stepmother's home, allegedly by a self-appointed "neighborhood watch captain".
The Sanford, Fla., Police Department's decision to release the tapes comes three weeks after the "watch captain", George Zimmerman, 28, who is white, allegedly shot Tray Martin, a high-school junior who is black, as he made his way home.
Police Chief Billy Lee said Zimmerman asserts he shot Martin out of self-defense.
On his way back into the gated suburban Orlando community after stepping out, Martin, wearing a hood, was spotted by Zimmerman.
According to law enforcement sources who heard Zimmerman's call to a non-emergency police number, he told a dispatcher "these a**holes always get away."
Zimmerman described Martin as suspicious because he was wearing a hooded sweatshirt...
