dems to roast rummy over planned parenthood remark

did it come as a surprise to you that a Republican would be in favor of eliminating federal funding going to PP?.......not sure if I'm seeing something "roastable" here.....

No. We're not surprized at all that you'd be that glaringly stupid. PPP is not only the premier public health institution for women (I know....from your standpoint it's not like they're protecting anyone important....like men.) but they are one of the most cost affect public health organizations in the nation. They do more to prevent serious medical issues and subsequent costs for women than any other public health ogranization in this nation but we get it. We understand perfectly well that protecting womens health is not important to you.

I think it's incorrect to assume that moderates and independents are not interested in reducing federal spending.....
I think it incorret to assume that moderates and independents are not interested in protecting womens health. Most particularly, and this seems to be missing from your analysis, most women are interested in protecting womens health.

Steve Benen:

IF IT WAS GOOD ENOUGH FOR REAGAN.... There was a tidbit on Planned Parenthood's wiki page that jumped out at me.

Planned Parenthood has received federal funding since 1970, when President Richard Nixon signed into law the Family Planning Services and Population Research Act, amending the Public Health Service Act. Title X of that law provides funding for family planning services, including contraception and family planning information. The law enjoyed bipartisan support from liberals who saw contraception access as increasing families' control over their lives, and conservatives who saw it as a way to keep people off welfare.

Wait, "since 1970"? If this is accurate -- and I've seen this date referenced elsewhere -- this means that every federal budget for more than four decades has provided public funds to Planned Parenthood and the preventative health care services they provide.

That would include, by the way, budgets approved under five Republican presidents -- Nixon, Ford, Reagan, Bush, and Bush -- none of whom saw the need to scrap funding for the health organization.

Indeed, every Republican lawmaker who supported budgets under GOP administrations -- a large group of long-time members, including Speaker John Boehner -- voted to fund Planned Parenthood, over and over again.

Nothing has changed as far as the organization is concerned. The only thing that's changed is the radicalism of new Republican Party, which seems inclined to shut down the government rather than allow working-class and low-income women from accessing contraception, family planning services, pap smears, cancer screenings, and tests for sexually-transmitted diseases.

I guess the question then becomes, if Planned Parenthood funding was good enough for Reagan, and the Republicans who voted for Reagan-era budgets, why is it beyond the pale now?

That is a VERY good question...let's ask it again since not a one of this board's Righties seem to want to address it:

exit polls in Mississippi and Alabama showed that the women voting were primarily concerned with the state of the economy......liberal pundits remain confused.......

Roe v Wade happened......abortions were illegal before 1973........how many abortions was PP conducting when Reagan was president?......today, it's over 5000 a week.....

another reason a gop candidate is not in my favor. dumb comment and dumb philosophy. we don't need to stop funding for planned parenthood.

it will be interesting to see if the dems can get any mileage over this remark

once more rummy puts his food in his mouth and alienates women and independents with his hard shift to the right

We saw McCain sell his soul for a shot at the White House in '08. It's becoming a Republican tradition. Right. Left. Up. Down. Say anything. Do anything. I'm sure Romney will "straighten things out". Like Gingrich previously stated, 'If you quote what I said I'll deny it."

The Republican contenders give a whole new meaning to the word "slime".

and obama ran on a platform of no more FISA....how did that turn out for you?

all politicians do this, well, most, if not all.

It's one thing to plan on doing something and later, when faced with additional facts/circumstances, change ones mind and quite another to change position to suit the audience while campaigning.
