GM Halts Production of Chevy Volt, Lays Off 1,300 Workers…

General Motors has told 1,300 employees at its Detroit Hamtramck that they will be temporarily laid off for five weeks as the company halts production of the Chevrolet Volt and its European counterpart, the Opel Ampera.

“Even with sales up in February over January, we are still seeking to align our production with demand,” said GM spokesman Chris Lee.

Lee said employees were told Thursday that production would put on hold from March 19 to April 23.

The Chevrolet Volt, an extended-range electric car, is both a political lightning rod and a symbol of the company’s technological capability.

Chevrolet sold 1,023 Volts in the U.S. in February and has sold 1,626 so far this year.

In 2011, Chevrolet sold 7,671 Volts, but fell short of its initial goal of 10,000.

GM had planned to expand production of its Volt plug-in hybrid to 60,000 this year, with 45,000 earmarked for the U.S.

Last fall, the GM and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration spent several weeks trying to explain why two Volts whose batteries were punctured caught on fire after sitting around for at least a week.

I wonder if Obama vowing to buy a Volt while visiting the car plant this week had anything to do with it.

Next week the asshole will squander another few million or billion of the taxpayers money to prop up this looser and buy some union votes in the process......

Maybe next year we can start drilling , build the Keystone pipeline and start to get of the hole this clown and his party has put us in.....
Have some domestic energy in 8 or 9 years.....

just called my son to see if they said anything at work (he's at the LG Chem plant that makes the batteries for the Volt).......they hadn't.....

Righties rejoice when American workers lose their jobs...remember in November.

I still think that hydrogen is the way to go for vehicles, it is much lighter in its liquid form than batteries, hence gives a far higher power/ weight ratio. The ideal scenario would be thorium powered nuclear plants supplying cheap energy to produce hydrogen from sea water.

If Obama proposed a massive effort to build a hydrogen fueling infrastructure, do you think the Right would support it?

Probably if there was immediate money in it, however it will need an huge investment in infrastructure and a long term plan. Which are an anathema to the right, as it smacks of socialism.

I suspect that if Obama produced a cure for cancer the Right would condemn it, and him.

Noooooooooooo
It's not just a turd with a pretty bow on it, it's very expensive and has more smugness per gallon than a Prius.

that is a bit of stretch. most on the right are for infrastructure building.

Come on so he pissed a few billion away on the volt, nearly a billion on solar scams for high ranking democrats, and attack any company making money! How can you not say he's good for the economy, hes still hoping to swindle more unemployment yet again.

I wonder if Webby and his cronies crowed when this speech was made?

"The best way to break this addiction is through technology. Since 2001, we have spent nearly $10 billion to develop cleaner, cheaper and more reliable alternative energy sources. And we are on the threshold of incredible advances. So tonight I announce the Advanced Energy Initiative -- a 22% increase in clean-energy research at the Department of Energy to push for breakthroughs in two vital areas. To change how we power our homes and offices, we will invest more in zero-emission coal-fired plants; revolutionary solar and wind technologies; and clean, safe nuclear energy. We must also change how we power our automobiles. We will increase our research in better batteries for hybrid and electric cars and in pollution-free cars that run on hydrogen."
