Obama is on to something... algae...

Unfortunately for Krauthammer, his mocking of Obama is quite f'in retarded.

While algae is by no means the be all end all replacement for oil, it most certainly is a replacement for grain based biofuel.

I have mentioned this particular firm in the past and have personally visited a couple of their sites (they are here in CO... this was started by professors and students at CSU). But take a look at http://www.solixbiofuels.com/ . The Air Force already is using algae based biofuel. When I went to CSU to see their alt energy research department with the Chamber in 2008, the DoD was there in force to also see what the fuss was about. Since then they have ramped up algae based biofuel use (still very minimal, but increasing).

What Krauthammer (after his 'research') mocks about its ability to grow anywhere is actually one of the biggest proponents (the other being that the production process uses far less water than grain based). Algae CAN be grown anywhere. Have a barren piece of land? Can't be used for crops, animals or development. It can be used for algae production. Obviously if it is in the middle of nowhere, transportation of the end product is an issue, so in the middle of nowhere sites would have to be large enough to make it economically viable.

The other benefit is the lack of waste product. The waste product is a high carb food source for livestock (which further decreases the use of grain etc... to feed livestock).

While Krauthammer is correct to knock Obama for lack of drilling etc.. in the US for nat gas and oil, he is mocking algae based on nothing more (or so it appears) than a dislike of Obama. Just as our own ditzie mocks Obama for a corporate tax rate reduction. It is pathetic. The non-stop partisan bullshit has to stop. Both sides have good ideas. Both have bad ones. Neither is all evil or all good.

end of rant.

I am a firm believer in throw everything, including the kitchen sink at it. Not the go really slow at everything and be all wishy-washy plan we have going now. Obama's energy plan sucks because he isn't aggressive enough at any of it. We'll let y'all keep drilling what ol' Georgie let you drill and then we'll give millions to failing companies over and over, but not enough to really push the alternates... We'll press for stupid corn-based fuel but not enough to really make it a cheap enough alternative to regular fuel...

Gah...

No, drill like a mofo with a directive to get our nation off the foreign energy drug ASAP, while driving for the "new economy" you believe should exist with far more gusto than this. Free pipelines from companies in a neighboring good friend nation who were willing to change the path of the pipeline to avoid the wells in SD (or wherever) should be a YES not a wishy washy maybe later and then a NO so they'll pipe it elsewhere and sell it to others who have no qualms whatsoever in using it.

Corn ethanol can never simulate cane ethanol as in Brazil. No matter how long we pursue it. Pursuing cellulistic alcohol is bullshit too. We should be working towards methanol instead.

At a minimum, every fossil fuel generating facility should be using algae scrubbers to lower CO2 output.

why do we sell our oil on the open market instead of keeping it for our own use

Corn ethanol can never simulate cane ethanol as in Brazil.

so what?.....we don't have any surplus sugar cane lying around......what we had in surplus before ethanol was corn.....that's why researchers were trying to find something to use it for......

ethanol is ethanol, bio-diesel is bio-diesel.......same stuff regardless of what its produced from

actually, some algae can be used to produce ethanol, other types to produce bio-diesel....

The science is simple: Algae need water, sunlight and carbon dioxide to grow. The oil they produce can then be harvested and converted into biodiesel; the algae's carbohydrate content can be fermented into ethanol. Both are much cleaner-burning fuels than petroleum-based diesel or gas.

Given the right conditions, algae can double its volume overnight. Unlike other biofuel feedstocks, such as soy or corn, it can be harvested day after day. Up to 50 percent of an alga's body weight is comprised of oil, whereas oil-palm trees—currently the largest producer of oil to make biofuels—yield just about 20 percent of their weight in oil. Across the board, yields are already impressive: Soy produces some 50 gallons of oil per acre per year; canola, 150 gallons; and palm, 650 gallons. But algae is expected to produce 10,000 gallons per acre per year, and eventually even more.

How many MP3 players were sold in each of those years?

Also... in 2001, there were ipods sold dolt. You should know that being an Apple junkie.
Are you pimping the stock fag? You were jizzing cellulosic biofuel a couple years ago yet no commercial plants still exist. Excuse me if I have fun at your retardted replace oil ideas.

poor toppy... thanks for once again proving your reading comprehension skills are equitable to your spelling skills. From the OP:

So now that we know it will not work, why don't we stop?

??....probably because it works great, would you rather the corn was still lying around unused and the government was subsidizing farmers to keep them from going broke?.....you do realize that the ethanol subsidies saved us billions in farm subsidies, right.....far more than we spent on ethanol subsidies?.....
