We could cut our military spending in half and still spend more then the rest of the world combined does. Our military is grossly bloated and needs slashed.

The problem with the military industrial establishment is that it employs a vast army of workers. To support it. That is a great source of political support for increasing military spending. Pacticularly in the south.

I dunno, defend it? It would be fascinating for defense to actually take place in the place they are defending. It would be right of there with retaliating after the attack rather than before it.

It's nice that people want more military spending, they always seem to forget however that we have no money. They complain with one hand about not getting that spending then with the other that China owns too much of our debt.

Yes, It would be good to close a lot of foriegn bases.
No, it would not be good to have a standing army, millions strong domesticly without posse commitatus.

We already have that. All those things I listed occur. Regularly.
Now I don't argue against a downsizing of force, but a standing professional military is a requirement these days.

No....not even with all known reserves. With all available for call up, its about 2.2 million, around 1 million of those are reserves.
