Question for Republicans

Rationalist

Hail Voltaire
In the history of the US, only fifteen Presidents have been Democrat. Eighteen have been Republicans. And yet, spending has never actually been cut, and the deficit has never shrunk (except in the late 90s, when Bill Clinton was in the White House). The only time the debt was reduced by a Republican was in the 1950s under Eisenhower, a liberal Republican. Every other Republican President, including Ronald Reagan, grew the government.

How do you explain this?

With such a pathetic record of fiscal conservatism, how do you ever expect the GOP will reduce the size and scope of government? Hell, Clinton did much better. If he were able to run again, I'd vote for him in a heartbeat over Romney or Gingrich.

i do not think that they can except with more pejoratives and ill conceived general dodges

I explain it simply. I like Ike

I'm very interested in hearing what Dixie has to say about this. Who needs "socialist marxists" when we have Republicans doing such a fine job?

The nation continues to grow. And Presidents cant spend a cent or levy taxes. Congress does that.

The usual responses ignore everything that happened before Reagan and then proceed thusly.

Reagan's deficits (some of the highest as a percentage of GDP since the end of WWII) are either (1) the Democratic Congress's fault or (2) were absolutely necessary to defeat the Soviet Union. Clinton's successes were really the product of either (1) the Republican Congress or (2) the dot-com bubble. GWB's failures were either (1) caused by 9/11 or (2) the Democratic Congress from 2006 onward. As for Obama, well, he's a soshulist.

So the President can't veto spending bills? Interesting. Was President Bush forced to create new entitlement programs, such as the Prescription Drug Program? Was he coerced into expanding the Department of Education by the Republican majorities in the House and Senate, via "No Child Left Behind"? Sure didn't seem like it.

Why did the budget balloon from $1.8 trillion when Clinton left office to $3.2 trillion when Bush left office? Republicans controlled the House and Senate for six years under Bush. They had everything they needed, including the Supreme Court, and yet government continued to grow. Why?

That's not true at all. That's a complete cop out and a lousy excuse. The other part of Skidmarks question is "why are Republicans so unwilling to be held accountable for their mistakes?" Everyone makes mistakes.....except Republicans it seems.

Reagan added about 1.6 trillion to the debt in 8 years. Obama is seeking another raise in the debt ceiling to 16.4 trillion. IF he could make it through the end of next year on that amount, he will have added 5.8 trillion in just 4 years.

Reagan had the highest spending as a percentage of GDP and the highest deficit as a percentage of GDP since 1946. And he didn't have the deepest recession since the Great Depression to deal with.

Thats because under Reagan policies were enacted to prevent such a recession. AND, the recession was over in March of 2009,2 1/2 months after Obama entered office.
