Joe Paterno at center of an unholy mess

This is a huge scandal here in PA. Joe Paterno is in serious danger of getting the boot, along with all the other jerks who just sat by and let this child molestation continue for close to twenty years. Paterno still has his fans, especially among the students, but his star is falling rapidly. He knew what was going on and in the words of one of our columnists, lateraled the info to his boss and never followed up on what happened. Even if Paterno fulfilled his legal requirement, he (and the others) had a moral imperative to see that Sandusky never had another chance to abuse an innocent child.

It is a huge scandal all over the country. I heard being discussed in the Bay Area on both sports talk radio and political talk radio. Penn St did not and has not handled this well at all.

Jason Whitlock (sports writer) had a good article on this yesterday. Pointing out that this story conveniently broke the week after Joe Pa set the record for division I wins by a coach. As Jason stated, Joe Pa should not be coaching another Penn State game.

Penn St in my opinion handled this like the Catholic Church. It is disgraceful.

My brother was just telling me the details of this about an hour ago. I couldn't believe it. And there is even a missing DA in the mix?

He shouldn't just be "in serious danger" he should be fired. Nobody who knows that children are being victimized, and who then doesn't immediately report it to the authorities, should be allowed to work in a society of decent human beings. There is no excuse good enough, no reasoning twisted enough, to make it okay to allow a predator of children to continue to operate.

If anyone feels like getting sick to their stomach here is the Grand Jury report. I could only read the first few pages, it is too much to take. I'm almost surprised Sandusky hasn't killed himself yet because he will get torn up when he goes to prison.

I had to stop reading as well. It is beyond the pale. You are right, if he doesn't kill himself he is without question going to reap what he sowed.

All the hoopla about Paterno......

Where the fuck is the outrage for the eyewitness that actually saw a kid being abused and does nothing......leaves the kid to the abuser and goes his
merry way home to call his Daddy first, then to Paterno with his now hearsay evidence and tells him......

Now Joe is on the spot with what to do....suppose he goes to the cops and it turns out to be a lie.....destroying an innocent mans reputation in the process....
He didn't witness it....its just another accusation about someone else to him....
He reports the accusation to the higher ups at the school as he should.....
Paterno is a football coach not the freakin' dean of the school.....

Now what kind of asshole sees a kid being abused and walks away without so much as a "Hey, whats going on there".....

He'll be in protective custody. No sane state would set themselves up for the "unusual punishment" lawsuit that his mother would bring were he to be tortured like he deserves.

They too should be fired, after they are skewered in the press. However Paterno was his boss, got the reports of both witnesses and sat on them. They reported the instances, Paterno didn't do anything about it. There is no excuse for that, he should be fired, humiliated in the press, skewered so to speak, and fired again. Rehired and fired one more time for good measure.

He's very sick. But it seems to me that he had institutional protection. That is even more horrifying. Heartbreaking that he picked on disadvantaged kids with promises of going to see games. I mean seriously, you could cry just from reading that part. But he had some power there protecting and shielding him. That is beyond sick to me, it's horrifying. Like SF said, it really reminded me of the Catholic Church. Who's sicker? The pedophile rapist or the people who give him cover? What's more evil? You could debate that for a long time, but every monster who had a hand in this needs to pay.

Paterno told the AD, his boss, which is why he is not in legal trouble. He obviously failed morally.

Paterno's "defense" is that he reported it to his boss, the Athletic Director. That may (though I personally don't think so) save his hide criminally, but its morally reprehensible. The whole thing is disgusting.

The latest report is that Joe Pa will retire at the end of the season. It's a joke.

I disagree. Child rapists are not provided protective custody. They are put among the general population. It would take an extraordinary leap in my opinion to say that the general population was 'unusual punishment'.

Paterno was whose boss.....???
Who was this second witness ???

Yes, he should have also reported it all to the police. That said, the coward had quit in 1999 and supposedly Joe Pa learned about it in 2002. Other than ensuring that police knew about the coward, there wasn't much else he could have done.

I used to work for an organization, a non-profit, whose main goal was child sex abuse prevention. The pedophiles target disadvantaged kids and any kid with problems. For instance they will target a child who is in trouble with juvenile law. They think no one will believe them. The really heart-rending thing is; nobody does. Nobody listens to them. Nobody cares. Also, pedophiles who target boys will rape/molest at least triple the number of victims as a pedophile who targets girls, before they are caught. On average. This guy seems textbook, but the institution of Penn State appears to have provided the kind of cover up for his actions that we've so far been used to from the Catholic Church. This is not something I've heard of schools doing before. It's really evil.

Sandusky left in 1999......abuse took place in 2002.....he did not work for Paterno....

Asst. Coach McQueary witnessed the abuse in 2002........who is this second witness ?

I don't buy it that Paterno learned about it in 2002. In 1998 the PSU campus police investigated a claim by a woman who said that Sandusky showered with her son. Sandusky admitted it. No charges were brought at the time. Sandusky at 55 year old top defensive coordinator in college football and heir apparent to the then 72 year old Joe Pa, retired the next year. However, he retained "emeritus" status, giving him access to the facilities and the locker room. If you think that's all coincidence and that Joe had no idea, I've got a bridge to sell ya. Happy Valley is a small town. Word gets around, particularly to the biggest celebrity in town.

And what about from 2002 to the present. Joe didn't inform the police. He told the AD, who did nothing.
