Obamacare and Health Care Mandate Now Illegal in Ohio..

It took some time to find a story on this one as almost all election coverage was on "curbing unions"...

This is HUGE, they OVERWHELMINGLY voted to tell Obama that his health care plan was right out.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- While Issue 2 and a proposal to raise the judicial retirement age went down in flames, Ohio voters overwhelmingly passed a ballot measure barring laws requiring them to buy health insurance.

Overshadowed by the high-profile fight over whether to overturn Senate Bill 5, supporters of the ballot issue to bar any legislation requiring Ohioans to buy health insurance turned out enough of their conservative base -- and swing voters -- to easily roll to victory.

With 89 percent of the vote counted, Issue 3 -- a strike at President Barack Obama's health care plan -- was cruising to a win. The measure was ahead, 66 percent to 34 percent.

It's not really a big story because it's largely irrelevant:

"The U.S. Supreme Court will meet in a closed session this week to debate whether it should hear a challenge to the federal healthcare law’s individual mandate. If the court ultimately strikes down the coverage mandate, Ohio’s amendment — and the smattering of other state laws disapproving of the mandate — would become moot. If the court upholds the mandate, it would preempt state laws."

But hey, on the day after the Personhood Amendment went down, and the union-busting bill was destroyed, you want to cheer a symbolic victory.

Don't let me rain on your parade!

I love how "the conservatives" were able to do this, but those same people voted to kill the law on public union bargaining. And yes, the Obamacare ban is a big deal.

Actually, unless you can dispute something in the below quote, it basically defines "symbolic victory." Can you dispute something here:

The media tends to go with whatever "the wave" is in an election. So, if the GOP takes the House, that's the story, and all of the other stories will be highlighted to center around that main story. They won't give a big headline to "but a Dem wins here!"

So, yesterday, conservatives got walloped - everywhere, on just about everything. That's likely why you're not seeing big banner headlines on this one.

So. Your opinion is that while people in Ohio who vote pro-union are against Obamacare, it isn't important because the SCOTUS is going to rule on this, while at the same time the vote that was pro-union is the only one that matters? I don't think so. What happened here was hugely against the growth of government, the message from the Ohio election is, at best, mixed.

And what I would say is that the SCOTUS could let previous rulings stand and this law would be important as the mandate is clearly necessary for the law to be effective.

We elected a Democratic County Exec in the biggest race. I don't know how big of a victory it is since Cuomo endorsed him, but the Republicans got beat bad. It wasn't even close. I was surprised to discover that it wasn't just here. Seems to go against the narrative we have been hearing for 2012. Hmmmmm.

Except that isn't true. In Mississippi the republicans won nearly everything.

Were this true I would almost agree with you.

No, what I'm saying is that it's not relevant to the outcome of the national health care debate, nor even whether or not Ohio will have a mandate. If there's a federal mandate, Ohio is going to be in it. That's pretty much how it works. I'm not pro-mandate, I'm pro-Medicare for all, you know, the smart solution? But reality is reality. And the reality is a Supreme Court approval supersedes this, and a supreme court striking the mandate down, makes it, as they say, moot. Pretty simple stuff.

However, symbolically, you won one. :cheer:

The media goes with what is going to sell more soap.

For most of the year, I have thought that Obama is toast in the next election. After watching the field of GOP "hopefuls" for awhile, I actually think it's certain that he'll win at this point.

Honestly, I'm genuinely worried about guys like Damo when that happens.
