I don't think the MBA has anything to do with it. I went to shitty public middle and high school. It was so bad, when I did my first semester at Juco I placed out of freshman English if you can believe that. Remember this was metro Nawlins in 1980 apparently composing a paragraph ws above average skill.

I've dealt with guys on Wall Street who make half a million a year and don't know the difference between they're, there, and their. Lawyers too actually. A lot of lawyers are horrible with grammar and spelling. I don't know what causes it, I always assumed they just had no interest in English courses and napped through them. It is true though that the old timers, people my mom's age and older, have far superior grammatical skills. Even with just a high school education. So, you could be right about the cause.
 
Like me they don't care, I had a corporate writing class like you teach too. I probably did better for a few months. We are like the the gear head who is always working on cars. Except with me it's stocks.
 
The ability to convey your intent is what matters. Spelling and grammer is in a large part elitism, you dont play by my artificial rules so you are not as good as me.

I went to a Catholic grade school and if nothing else, have to credit those nuns for their insistence on good grammar and spelling.
