Can Whites Ever Say The N-Word? Op-Ed by Toure' for Time

No one is silencing or controlling you. Like I said - use racial & ethnic slurs all day long. Some people do, and they don't end up in jail.

Have at it...

And some people die, because of it. Let him say it to Big Brutus, and when he's on the other side, facing St. Peter, don't wonder what happened....just go with the flow. No doubt, "South".

And you will get "read", when you do. Be advised.

Calling someone a "Negro" is now a slur? When did this word become offensive?

Then to the "some", that's their problem. Also, please inform this organization that they are offending "some" people. Thanks.

How about "colored"? Is calling someone a "colored" person offensive to you?

You seem to need some education on what words are offensive & what aren't.

Is that how you converse with people? When you're speaking with a woman, for instance - are you aware that there are some terms that women find offensive to them, or do you just let 'em fly?

Le'ts stick to the topic. Now I'm sure you could "educate" me on words and their use, no doubt. However, I am in no need to be re-educated. I'm looking for some common sense. Does the term "Colored People" offend you?

They're just words. They are only offensive in the ear of the beholder, and we don't need a liberal to instruct us on what or what not to say. We're pretty much fed up with this politically correct crap intended to silence and control us.

Why do you correlate not using offensive language with political correctness? How about tying it to good manners, civil behaviour or the Golden Rule instead.

Words in general don't offend me. I can't think of one that offends me personally.

But, I have awareness of what words offend other people, or words that could possibly offend other people. You don't seem to.

To me, it's just good manners. But like I said - no one is stopping you. Slur all you want...

So how come the UNCF and the NAACP can use the words "Negro" and "Colored Persons" and when I do it, it's not good manners, uncivil, and against the Golden Rule?

I'll tell you. It's quite simple, so even you can understand. When the UNCF and the NAACP were formed those were the standard references for black people. They have since fallen out of fashion, but it would be too disruptive for the branding to change the acronyms to suit political correctness. Capice?

Who determines when something is in fashion or not? Are you one of the fashion fascists?

Thank you for that thoughtful, informed response. I'm in agreement.

I think it goes to an extent back to our differences when you first came on the board. You couldn't understand how Cawacko and myself could call black friends our 'boys'. We don't think anything of it. You generation obviously went through different times and is offended by it. Now having read the article in the OP and reflecting on my reaction to my nieces casual use of the word 'nigga', I think I better understand why you couldn't comprehend our position. Maybe it is just a generational thing. Just my thoughts.

Black folks, collectively, determine how they want to be labeled. Just like anybody else. Guess what? It wouldn't be you.

Herman Cain is black. So who gave you the authority to call Herman Cain an "Uncle Tom" and a "Sellout"?

You're still missing the point. It's astounding how dense you can be.

It's not about "permission" or "authority." Legally, you can say pretty much whatever you want.

You directed your post to the wrong person. Poet is the one who claims Blacks have the authority and we all need their permission on how to speak.

Me, being black. I can call out one of my own on their shit, better than you. And you could call out one of your own, better than me. He is an "Uncle Tom" and a "sellout". Just look at the Republican field. He sounds no different than one of the white candidates....he sounds no different from the obvious "racist white candidates". You do realize that the Republican platform is, in and of itself, "racist" and discriminatory. That he supports it, without wavering, gives me the authority to call him a "water-toting" Stephin Fetchit serving the Massa, Uncle Tom Negro. Now you want to try and dispute my claim? I'm all ears.
