Everyone is Invited.. even you liberals

I have out pointed several times that the only way to remove the poison from a word like nigger is to use it so often that the potency is lost. I cannot see the sense in resorting to euphemisms.

We certainly find that to be true. Hardly a day goes by without the word 'gwei-lo' being aimed at non Chinese. Sometimes we take offence, it rather depends on the circumstances, but usually we use the word and even connect it with 'Ji-sin' meaning 'crazy'. So I might refer to an English friend when speaking to a Chinese as 'ji sin gwei lo'. There is usually a look of uncertainty then a broad grin.
However it is different when it is meant as a slur, as happened to me in a bank a while ago, when a small tot was looking up at me, open mouthed, and its parent grabbed it by the arm, pulled it away and told it 'don't go near the gwei lo. Very bad.' I tend to smile and say 'F*** off, bloody chink' and return to my duties.

I am wondering if the River Niger, Niger and Nigeria should be renamed.

Personally, i'm a 'use what you want' kind of chap (and the consequences which follow with said use).

I'm quite happy with using 'cunt' on a regular basis. For some reason i'm not alright with using, what some people refer to as, 'the n word'. I used to use it all the time when i was a kid, attending an almost all white school, in an almost all white neighbourhood, in an almost all white town. Frankly, i'm thoroughly ashamed of the sort of shit that i uttered and inflicted on the one black kid in my class.

Maybe everyone has to draw their own line?

Other people are going to make judgements on the words you use and how you choose to use them. The specific use of language does tend to tell you a great deal about an individual. Unfortunately, in this place, it tells many people that that there are an awful lot of cunts about. :D

I doubt that you will find anybody on here who will agree, about me being a racist, apart from you.

You use racial pejoratives. Why wouldn't someone think that? I suppose you think that you can write out the word, when you don't have to, but feel compelled to, due to "white privilege", and somehow, someway, you're immune to being labeled "a racist"? You're thinking like a white person and not like a regular human.

I agree with much of what you say but it also seems these days that there is a word police abroad attempting to impose a form of Newspeak on everyone. When I was at grammar school back in the 1960s I was called all sort of names for being catholic and of Irish descent. But then kids can be total bastards especially in a gang. My oldest son was bullied for some time at his secondary school by a Pakistani gang because he is half Thai, he wouldn't talk about for ages but when he did I went up the school and told the headmaster to sort it out. He seemed totally nonplussed at first because there wasn't a chapter in the PC handbook to cover a situation like that, so he actually had to use some common sense.

Where does all this stop? We now have F-word, C-word, N-word how long before there is one for every letter in the alphabet? I can understand why they are used on TV etc. but it is just stupidity to use euphemisms on a message forum. I was called Paddy and Mick at school, should we have a P-word and a M-word to add to the collection?

Curb Your Enthusiasm has used the word several times, do you think Larry Davis is sexist?

Do you have any compassion for women who may read this?
I don't find Larry David to be the least bit funny, I have watched his show several times and would rather sleep.
I don't see the point in even mentioning him.

As to whether he is a sexist, while totaly irrelevant, I find it likely.

I'm sorry that you don't get it. Don't want to get it. Can't get it.
There is no word in the English lexicon that has the deep history or context attached to it, as the n-word. All you're doing is rationalizing and trying to equate other racial pejoratives with "the racial pejorative". The Irish weren't enslaved, raped, or murdered, as a people. They weren't stolen from their land, and forced to work for free. You can't compare yourself to African-Americans, though you may try. You don't get it. And that's ok. People wander through life, often "not getting it". It's called "being unenlightened". But stop telling me and anybody else that we don't have a right to be offended, or to call somebody out for using the most grievous word, because they feel entitled to use it, due to "white privilege". You can't do or say anything you want without consequences. It's called cause and effect.

I am sure that two people from similar backgrounds could sensibly discuss this but when the backgrounds are as diverse as that of Tom and Poet the whole subject is fraught with difficulties.
As a mick, Tom has often suffered the indignity of being labelled Irish!
However most national nicknames are of a jocular nature, the danger comes when the nickname is used to dehumanise the person on the receiving end. In the late thirties Hitler's propaganda machine had dehumanised the word 'jew'. No nickname was necessary.
During the South African apartheid times the word 'black' ('blick' if you are a white native of SA) had a dehumanising effect. Now 'black' is acceptable in many places although in HK the word for black, hak sik, is extremely demeaning when referring to a person.
I have noticed that in the UK the fewer 'blacks' that live in an area the more frequent the racist comments and this must be the result of ignorance, but it tends not to be offered as a dehumaniser whereas some of the comments on here by what we might, in jest, call 'red blooded Americans' (as opposed to what ... ? Yellow blooded??) contain the whole list of negative values.
The answer to it all is enlightenment. It is to have sufficient respect for one's fellow man that one has no desire to be offensive. So the frog becomes the Frenchman, the spic becomes the Spaniard, the kraut is reborn as the German ... however, the teabagger is still the teabagger and the religious nutter is still the loony.
The other offensive terms, c***, f***, etc, should be avoided because, as posters, we have no way of knowing who else besides the target poster, has access to the computer. I do not wish my wife or grandchildren to enter my computer room and see obscenities scrolling across my screen, no matter how hilarious the perpetrators may think it. (Cue for the idiots to start scrolling. OK, children, get it out of your system.)

The word itself is usually directed at men by other men.

Jews and the Chinese were treated just as badly or even worse than blacks in America, Mao Zedong accounting for between 40-70 million Chinese deaths alone.
Koreans were enslaved by the Japanese and their women sent to be prostitutes for the soldiers in WW2. Arabs bought and sold Africans, in huge numbers, for the slave trade. The Spanish practically wiped out whole civilisations in South America, Shia and Sunni Muslims have done their level best to annihilate each other over the centuries. The Turks perpetrated genocide on the Armenians in 1915 killing over a million people.

Low, the exact same conversation is going on at another forum. Here is a posting from it:

No it is not the recipients fault that another person is a jerk and uses a racial pejorative. The recipient is responsible for how he feels about what is said. When you say "The onus on you is not to offend" you are giving control to the other party. You cannot control what he/she says. Only how you react to what he/she says. You are allowing yourself to be manipulated. A common victim mentality trait.

There is a difference between fault and responsibility. Casting blame is easy. Taking responsibility for one’s own feelings requires work.

You don't have to explain anything to anyone other than yourself. If you look honestly and objectively at why it is for your own benefit. The problem with that is it is too painful for most folks so they lash out in anger and frustration.

Color has nothing to do what you or I can say. You can say anything you like to me knowing that if I do take offense I recognize it is about how I feel and my fear and not your words. Instead of reacting defensively and attacking I would rather help you understand why you feel the way you do thus helping us both.

I wanted to take my shoe off and throw it. How can someone rationalize for someone else, what is offensive and what is not?
Has anyone been standing at a bus stop, and a car, loaded with 20-somethings, yells out "Mick", for no apparent reason? Of course not. However, the very thing happened to me, with the passengers hanging out the window, yelling the n-word, on more than one occasion. What is that? James Byrd, was in the wrong place at the wrong time to be drunk, and 3 racist bigots chained him to a truck and drug him to his death, because of his race. And he wants to compare that to being called "a Mick"? I'm about to lose my religion, up this camp.

Right. Let's have a pissing contest. Are you in those numbers? Are you Korean? Shi'ite? What? What effect has racism and bigotry had on you, personally...if you wanna piss.

It was 50 years ago. There were social movements "afoot" He was a comedian. And I hate to break it to you, but Jewish is not white.

Ashkenazi Jews are not white, are you serious? It seems that you are just as bad as the South Africans in the apartheid era wanting to label everybody according to their racial profile. What Lenny Bruce was doing back then was desensitising the word so that the poison was extracted, if he was around today you would be denigrating him as well.

Did you ever live in Africa, were you ever a slave on a plantation? Where did white privilege get the Polish when 8 million of them were wiped out by the Nazis?
