Death Panel Redux: The Real Deal

This is insane:

WASHINGTON — American militants like Anwar al-Awlaki are placed on a kill or capture list by a secretive panel of senior government officials, which then informs the president of its decisions, according to officials.

There is no public record of the operations or decisions of the panel, which is a subset of the White House's National Security Council, several current and former officials said. Neither is there any law establishing its existence or setting out the rules by which it is supposed to operate.

The panel was behind the decision to add Awlaki, a U.S.-born militant preacher with alleged al Qaeda connections, to the target list. He was killed by a CIA drone strike in Yemen late last month.

The role of the president in ordering or ratifying a decision to target a citizen is fuzzy. White House spokesman Tommy Vietor declined to discuss anything about the process.

I supported and give credit to Obama for the killing of al-Awlaki. However yes I agree that a group like this does seem insane and who knows what it could lead to down the road.

know why this is stupid? because there's zero constitutional authority for it, yet you and others support and credit that absolute lawlessness of it. what this does is gives government the vagueness it needs to do what it wants, and if it ends up doing something you really hate, all they have to do is claim immunity because the law didn't clearly state it........and you'll buy that too.

I don't support or applaud it.

On the positive side, SmarterThanFew is safe because I heard the government doesn't target do-nothing loudmouths.

I guess I was attempting to acknowledge the contradiction in my response. I realize by being happy al-Awlaki was killed, that using this method it could open up a huge pandora's box of unintended consequences in how the government uses this group.

You don't expect SmarterThanFew the jaw jacker to actually debate using facts, do you?

This makes me slightly ill... and now that one President claimed this ultimate authority, it will never be rescinded. This is exactly the kind of thing one should ask, "Do you think it would be okay if <insert political opponent here> exercised the same authority?"

did the political opponent wage war against the US?

So you're cool with the Executive branch just rescinding citizenship without regard to naturalization or birth? Just let them wipe with the constitution because we're at war? I disagree.

It's too late for the dead.

This is why capital punishment is also wrong. If it's discovered a mistake was made, it's impossible to redress.

It's funny that some JPP conservatives love the idea of killing Muslims so much that they are reluctant to slam Obama for violating the Fifth Amendment.

This has been rough on them.
