at the time of its beginning, sharia law was liberal as it tried to change the current laws and the way people had lived for thousands of years. it is really stupid to try and compare the two philosophies and totally disingenuous to lump everything that is based on tradition as conservative.

In the Gulf states, Sharia is the law. I went through Dubai to go to Thailand and to come back. You can be jailed for having codeine, ephedrine and many other commonly taken legal drugs without a prescription.

The concept of civil and criminal law systems co-existing are alien to the Gulf States. Sharia is the law, period. There is certainly no concept of precedent, the Koran doesn't change so Sharia doesn't as well.
