After reading accounts of it, it doesn't seem like they just saw him and executed him at point blank range*. Apparently, there were guns in the other room, and he was running to get them.

*Although Obama has been known to order operations of that sort before - as only Nixon could go to go to China, only Obama could make assassination normal US policy, setting one of the worst precedents I think a human being has ever set.
