Paul Ryan Protester Handcuffed, Pushed To Ground By Wisconsin Police

WASHINGTON -- Three individuals were arrested and charged with trespassing on Tuesday for protesting a speech by Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.). Video footage taken by an attendee at the event shows that one of them, Tom Nielsen, received particularly harsh treatment -- he was pushed to the ground and handcuffed. Nielsen received an additional charge of resisting arrest.

Nielsen is a 71-year-old retired plumber from Kenosha, which falls within Ryan's district. He had never been able to attend a Ryan town hall event in the past -- partly, he explained, because he rarely knew when they were scheduled for in advance -- and was excited to get to Tuesday's to make his views heard.

In video posted by Wisconsin Jobs Now, Nielsen shouts that he disagrees with Ryan on entitlement programs during the congressman's speech. Two uniformed police officers and another man in a suit then escort Nielsen out. In the hall, Nielsen can be heard shouting. He was eventually pushed to the ground and handcuffed by police officers.

"Three people got me and hauled me backwards out the side door and into a little room. ... They pushed me the floor and twisted my arms back and handcuffed me. They said I was resisting arrest," recounted Nielsen in an interview with The Huffington Post.

"I have a broken clavicle from a car accident I had about four weeks ago, and it's in the process of healing, but it's not done yet. So I was protecting that. I said, 'Don't hurt me! I have a broken shoulder here and collarbone.' They didn't pay attention to that. They put the cuffs on really, really tightly."

Nielsen and the two other individuals who were arrested had to sit in a "paddy wagon" for an hour or two before being taken to the police station, he said.

Nielsen said he is still a bit sore from Tuesday's scuffle. He faces fines amounting to approximately $1,000 for trespassing and resisting arrest, which he plans to challenge in court.

After Nielsen was removed from the event, Ryan tried to make light of the situation, saying, "I hope he's taking his blood pressure medication."

Ryan's office did not return a request for comment.

It's fucking sickening.

If this piece of shit legislator is re-elected it will be an indictment of his entire state's stupidity.

So, just to be clear.... if a person is having a public speaking engagement, anyone in the audience is free to interrupt and try to shout them down with no consequences? Is that what you two are proposing?

wisconsin cops have been like this for 20 years. the people of that state like it that way. re-electing ryan shouldn't change any aspect of the representation of that states stupidity.

Oh, I'm sorry...the honorable Mr. Ryan was having a speaking engagement? I thought it was a town hall meeting. But those people in the room work for Mr. Ryan, not the other way around.

Yes, a town hall meeting is a speaking engagement. It is not a forum in which a person can come in and simply try and shout down/disrupt the meeting in any manner he/she wishes. It is childish on the part of the man that was arrested. In a town hall forum, typically the speaker is allowed the ability to make a statement and then to actually answer the questions posed to him/her by the crowd. But I know, you support complete chaos. You believe that people can just disrupt these events in any manner they wish. For your information.... Paul Ryan is also entitled to free speech. The crowd there is entitled to hear his answers.

Tell me.... if every townhall meeting allowed people to simply start shouting at each other at will, what would be accomplished?

The man was entitled to speak without being thrown to the ground, handcuffed and arrested. Ryan made NO ATTEMPT to address the man, attempt to lower the tone or temperature and answer his LEGITIMATE question.

Were you equally outraged when the tea partiers were bused into town hall meetings, given written instructions authored by a lobbyist how to disrupt a town hall meeting and they stood up and shouted? I don't recall them being thrown to the ground, handcuffed and arrested.

Yes, he is entitled to speak. AS IS RYAN. The man doesn't have the right to just shout out any time he wishes. As I stated, if EVERYONE did that, it would be chaos. That is why there is a FORMAT to be followed. If you don't follow it, you get tossed. If you fight getting tossed, you often get arrested. All any of us know is what was on that 30 second video. In that video Ryan was speaking and the man shouted him down and was escorted out, then arrested. We have no idea what happened PRIOR to the video. Unless you have seen something else I haven't.

Let me ask you again, do you really propose that everyone be able to shout down any politician in such a setting? If so, why would any politician ever hold a town hall again? Opponents would simply send in a few people and shout down everything they attempted to say. It is absurd.

I will stand against anyone who throws temper tantrums in an effort to silence opposing views. There are proper formats for protesting. There are proper formats for town hall meetings. If we do not adhere to them, then chaos will ensue.

Tell me, SuperFuck, what crimes did the 71 year old man commit?

You will have to ask the WI police for specifics. My guess is he was arrested for resisting officers that were escorting him out of a public forum he was attempting to disrupt. Again, as I stated, OTHER people also have rights. You do NOT have the right to go into a public forum and start shouting down the speaker. If we allowed people to do this, then there would be chaos and no one would ever get the opportunity to have discussions with elected representatives.

If you go into your boss's office, does he have a right to shout at you? I strongly suggest you go back to elementary school and take American history. Ask the teacher to explain our form of government and what a Public SERVANT means.

Thanks, but to a right wing authoritarian, speaking back to a public servant is apparently an arrestable offense, even if he can't figure out what law was supposedly broken.

So you aren't going to address my point in the least? Do you advocate that we all just go into town hall meetings and start shouting our positions? Or do you think there should be a format for Q/A?

Perhaps you should take your own advice and take history lessons on government. Do show me where our founders advocated chaos.

LMAO.... you two cowards are scared to answer the question. DO YOU ADVOCATE CHAOS at town hall meetings? Should everyone be 'entitled' to go in and just start SHOUTING?

And he would have been afforded that right if he simply had waited his turn like everybody else. It is not the right of everyone to interrupt, speak over, and generally make an ass of yourself on private property during an event in which you will get a turn to air your views. If we all followed this pattern nobody would ever be heard as we'd all be speaking at the same time. Now, if he had simply chose to act like a human he'd have been treated like one.

You didn't answer my question either. What law did he break for which he should be thrown to the ground?

I don't give a fuck what charges the locals are going to trump up against him. I want to know what law YOU think he broke.

As I stated, I am not familiar with WI laws, thus you will have to ask the police what laws he broke. I gave you the answer as to what I thought occurred. Perhaps you should go back and READ it. But no, I can't expect an emo like you to actually read.... can I?
