Certain members of government are so afraid someone is going to get something for nothing that they micromanage people's lives by having undue restrictions. "We'll give you X amount of dollars for food and X amount of dollars for rent and throw in some food stamps and a voucher for something else and on and on it goes so people are put in a position where they are scratching for every thing they get. That results in too many programs and not enough oversight.

Get rid of the food stamps and the vouchers and just give the person a set amount of money and let them budget it. If there is a program to subsidize students then just give the students a certain amount of money. If Johnny is a gigolo and Mary is a part time prostitute who gives a damn if they're completing their studies? If a person wants to live in a dive but eat well, so be it. If another individual wants a nice place and dumpster dives in the evenings behind fancy restaurants or bums meals from friends, so be it.

All these programs do is make jobs for supervisors, case workers, etc. That's the problem.

No. I wouldn't join an organisation whose existence depends on killing my fellow human beings and invading their countries.

The comforts I share, such as they may be, exist because of my efforts and the efforts of many others (Americans included) to build export markets for our respective economies. No crewcutted, braindead grunt has ever done anything for me and if such an occasion were to arise he would be an employee of my government and do as he was told. You do not need to be brave to accept dehumanising propaganda and shoot where you are told to shoot.
I am aware that the navy saved your sorry arse and gave you a job when you were too thick to do what I have done and I sympathise with the fact that it made you a dumb yank. I can do nothing about that. If I could.... I wouldn't!

I should just point out that Hong Kong was occupied by the Japanese in the Second World War, they didn't hand it back voluntarily

The Japs surrendered 6 days after the bomb fell on Nagasaki.

This reminded me of a dear friend whose funeral I attended about 4 years ago. He had been a POW at the Sham Shi Po camp. He told us tales of starvation and mistreatment and the local Chinese risking life and limb by hurling scraps of food over the walls to help the POWs.

Funny how things go because a year before he died my wife and I attended his 90th birthday at a hotel in Causeway Bay. Here amongst the speechifying and the champagne corks we met a young American who had served at Fallujah.

If you Google Fallujah you'll see that the toxic aftermath in terms of deformed babies, cancer, et al is worse than the aftermath of Nagasaki and Hiroshima combined. The young man, clearly a very small cog in a machine of US terror, appeared oblivious to the fact that, although his parents (deceased) had been friends of our friend, his reports of being an American soldier did not endear him to the assembled company. He was, nevertheless, quite a pleasant young man.

Having said all that I doubt that Jolly Jack had that sort of thing in mind when he made his little comment.

My point is that without the US and British navies the Japanese would never have been defeated.
