Trillions and trillions wasted on wars, a fiscal catastrophe, a weaker America.

The Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks by al-Qaida were meant to harm the United States, and they did, but in ways that Osama Bin Laden probably never imagined.

President George W. Bush's response to the attacks compromised America's basic principles, undermined its economy, and weakened its security.

The attack on Afghanistan that followed the 9/11 attacks was understandable, but the subsequent invasion of Iraq was entirely unconnected to al-Qaida—as much as Bush tried to establish a link.

That war of choice quickly became very expensive—orders of magnitude beyond the $60 billion claimed at the beginning—as colossal incompetence met dishonest misrepresentation.

Three years ago, the conservative tally was $3 trillion to $5 trillion.

Since then, the costs have mounted further.

Even if Bush could be forgiven for taking America, and much of the rest of the world, to war on false pretenses, and for misrepresenting the cost of the venture, there is no excuse for how he chose to finance it.

  • His was the first war in history paid for entirely on credit.

As America went into battle, with deficits already soaring from his 2001 tax cut, Bush decided to plunge ahead with yet another round of tax "relief" for the wealthy.

Today, America is focused on unemployment and the deficit.

Both threats to America's future can, in no small measure, be traced to the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

  • Increased defense spending, together with the Bush tax cuts, is a key reason why America went from a fiscal surplus of 2 percent of GDP when Bush was elected to its parlous deficit and debt position today.

Direct government spending on those wars so far amounts to roughly $2 trillion—$17,000 for every U.S. household—with bills yet to be received increasing this amount by more than 50 percent.

Stuff like Putting the war on credit has huge effects on the economy, I said it would cause a lasting crisis at the time, and now they blame President Obama!

I almost wish McCain had one sometimes so at least the correct party would continue to be blamed!

The correct villains are being blamed. Not all of America is like the JPP Tea-rorists.

But other than that, he kept the country safe. Except if you lived in Louisiana. Or were recruitment age. Or got sick. Or were counting on retiring. Or having some home equity. Or a job.

On this morning's last night's American news (I get confused as to the channel because we seldom watch the programme) they showed what was, perhaps, the phoniest attempt at creating history and promoting false patriotism ever, by showing something that purported to be a '911 Museum'!

The curator (!!) was pointing out things like, 'this is Mrs. Bloggs' actual credit card. Actual? as opposed to ... what.... a plastic copy?? This is Joe Sunninkovic's actual jacket, actually worn on the day .. blah .. blah. And here's an actual piece of steel from one of the actual buildings that Mrs. Bloggs was trapped in, the building that Joe Sunninkovic....blah ... blah... bloody blah.

They called it a bloody MUSEUM. The stuff is TEN bloody years old!!! I have bloody underwear that is ten years old!! (well nearly - who's counting?).
I know America has precious little history but for chrissakes a MUSEUM for ten year old credit cards??? gimme a break!

Next there will be a church built on the actual spot where where Mr. Hougivsashit actually fell over on the actual day and was heard to shout 'fer Christ Sakes...'. It'll be called the Jeremiah Hougivsashit Pentecostal Profitable Church Inc!

I can only point out the ridiculousness of it. I must leave it to you whether or not you agree.

I AM aware of what a museum is incidentally. I am British and Great Britain DOES have history stretching back several thousand years. Our museums are amongst the best in the world and our skills in prservation, classification and display are taught in most parts of the world.

But we DO try to keep things fairly sensible.

We also tend to have an innate ability to recognise when we are being conned. We'll teach you that if you like.

You could start the teaching by teaching yourself where you got the deluded idea that museums can only encompass history.

It just isn't so.

Please publish ONE dictionary definition which dictates that museum only hold historical artifacts.

Further, who are you to judge how we respond to one of our single greatest national tragedies?

No
National tragedy yes. Not quite up to the German blitz on London or the genocide in Ruanda or the slaughter of innocent Iraqis and Americans in your latest, and illegal war.
Instead of shedding more tears than a swamp full of crocodiles perhaps you would be better off counting your blessings and learning to ignore the various interested parties who keep you scared of your own shadows and engender the most phoney 'patriotism' seen by man.
In other words - Get over it. Remember. Regret. Move on.

The daylight bombing of September 7th 1940 was never repeated on the same scale. Fighter Command made sure its defences prevented any Luftwaffe day time attacks. During the hours of bombing that day, over 300 tons of high explosives and thousands of incendiaries had fallen. London was burning, and that evening 247 bombers returned. On the morning of September 8th, over 500 Londoners had been killed and nearly 1400 seriously injured. But when did the "Blitz" officially end?

149. London took the brunt of it with 73 raids which saw 5090 people killed, 29 raids hit Dover, 18 on Eastbourne and Brighton (Sussex Coastal towns), 16 hit Birmingham and Coventry (in the Midlands) and 13 on Liverpool (NW of England). In total over 5500 people were killed.

Nearly 3,000 victims and all 19 hijackers died in the attacks.[4] Among the 2,753 victims who died in the World Trade Center were 343 firefighters and 60 police officers from New York City and the Port Authority, and 8 private emergency medical technicians and paramedics.[5] Another 184 people were killed in the attack on the Pentagon.[6] There were no survivors from any of the flights and the overwhelming majority of casualties were civilians, including nationals of over 70 countries

3000 people died in one day in NYC

5000 people died during the blitz on London during almost 3 months.

Get over yourself.

Bin Laden's victory was/is far more engulfing than he could have ever dreamed.

Having caused the USSR to disolve due to bankruptcy caused by a 20 year war in Afghanistan, his attack on 9-11 has changed the very nature of the USA, to a fear based near totalitarian state, as well as also brought the USA to the brink of bankruptcy.

Under Bush and a Republican Congress, the DOW reached 14000+

Poor Blabo.

Under Bush the market tanked in the worst decline since the Great Depression.

The US stock market peaked in October 2007, when the Dow Jones Industrial Average index exceeded 14,000 points.

It then entered a pronounced decline, which accelerated markedly in October 2008.

By March 2009, the Dow Jones average reached a trough of around 6,600.

It has since recovered much of the decline, exceeding 12,000 for most of the first half of 2011.

You appear to have left out when the British deliberately adopted policies that caused as many as 29 million Indians to starve to death in the late nineteenth century or the genocide committed by the British in South Africa.
All you have to do is yell out Zulu and the British shit in their knickers.

I stole this quote:
"Britain not only conveniently still forgets the crimes of its imperial past, but it has also again begun to romanticise its colonial achievements and declare them a proper source of pride."

What was the average per-month job loss when he left?

George W. Bush entered office in 2001 just as a recession was starting, and left in the middle of a long one.

That’s almost 22 months of recession during his 96 months in office.

His job-creation record doesn’t look much better.

The Bush administration created about three million jobs (net) over its eight years, a fraction of the 23 million jobs created under President Bill Clinton‘s administration and only slightly better than President George H.W. Bush did in his four years in office.

President Bush - taking account how long he was in office - shows the worst track record for job creation since the government began keeping records.
