I don't know who Mr. Dyson is other than your link, but I'd call him a spinner of
the worst at best....he says thinks like,

"He (Cosby) has flatly refused over the years to deal with blackness and color in his comedy. Cosby was defensive, even defiant, in his views, as prickly a racial avoider as one might imagine..."

This is left wing spin....Cosby didn't refuse to deal with his blackness, or avoid race,....Cosby refused to be a race baiter or use his blackness as a crutch...he used his talent and his brains.

Cosby decided to face the issues head on and ignore the PC bullshit...
Cosby didn't attack the "poor" black, he confronted ALL blacks with the inconvenient truth...
Dyson's use of the word "poor" verges on an outright lie, poor this and poor that and poor black.....

"Poor" is a relative thing anyway....I grew up poor and because everyone around me was poor, it made little difference....
Being poor didn't prevent us from learning English grammar
Being poor didn't prevent us from learning to count and add and subtract
Being poor didn't make us into thieves or bullies....

Cosby never told black youth to ignore their history but more to not wallow in it...
Cosby didn't tell black youth to forget their unique culture, but to not be consumed by it.....

Excuse me, but I have a special and keen personal insight into Cosby, since his days as a comedian on record...and I have seen him "in concert", and short of "in private", and I have seen his transformation and his ineptitude and misguidance.

Bill Cosby overstepped his bouundaries by criticizing the black community, while distancing himself from it. He forgot where he came from. Dr. Michael Eric Dyson, simply reminded him of the fact.

I am not a great supporter of people who make their race the mainstay of their 'business'. We have a comedienne in the UK, who I do find quite funny sometimes, but almost every joke involves the fact that she is Iranian. If they have true talent it should not be necessary, in my humble opinion, to play the race card. Same with Jewish comedians and black comedians. I have said before that I find Chris Rock quite objectionable .. and not just because his raucous screeching frightens the hamster!

Bill Cosby was a talented performer but he relied far too much on his race to make people laugh. It is difficult to make reasoned comments because I have never heard a white comedian playing on his race. Hugh Grant possibly but more his Englishness than his race.

A funny man is a funny man and his or her race need not be a part of it. If I was Iranian I think I would find the first mentioned comedienne something of an embarrassment. If I was black I think I would find Chris Rock an afront to who and what I was.

Better stop burbling away now. Have things to do.

Got to dream up some 'I'm Caucasian but I've never been to the Caucasus.' jokes.
