How will she do this short of price controls? I would love $2 gas but how much control does the President really have that they can promise or guarantee this?

Bachmann: I'll bring back $2 gas

President Michele Bachmann has a promise: $2 gas.

"Under President Bachmann you will see gasoline come down below $2 a gallon again," Bachmann told a crowd Tuesday in South Carolina. "That will happen."

Sure, politicians promise all kinds of things on the campaign trail. But Bachmann, a leading contender for the 2012 Republican nomination, is wading into truly tricky territory.

The price Americans pay at the pump is tied to the crude oil market -- a global system largely beyond the reach of Washington.

It's certainly true that prices -- now about $3.50 a gallon on average -- have risen since President Obama took office.

"The day that the president became president gasoline was $1.79 a gallon," Bachmann said. "Look what it is today."

Of course, that's not the full story.

When Obama took office, the country was mired in a terrible economic contraction.

"That was in the 4th inning of the greatest recession of our lifetime," said Tom Kloza, chief oil analyst at the Oil Price Information Service.

During recessions, demand for gasoline plummets as trucks pull off the road, companies cut back on travel and laid off workers drive fewer miles.

Obama's desperate SPR oil play

"You have to be careful what you wish for because the recipe for cheap prices these days is economic disaster," Kloza said.

Since early 2009, the economy has recovered somewhat and demand for crude has risen. It has even spiked in the developing world -- especially in China, India and South America.

Kloza said that increased crude demand is the principal driver behind higher gas prices.

"We're going to have to recognize the rest of the world has this increasing appetite for oil," he said. "If we go below $2 a gallon, it probably means there has been a lot of wealth loss and we are in a deflationary period."

There are some measures that could be taken to lower gas prices, according to Phil Flynn, a senior market analyst at PFG Best.

A stronger dollar would take pressure off prices, and reducing the number of miles Americans drive in gasoline-powered cars would also weaken demand.

"I never say never," Flynn said. "But whether or not Bachmann can do that in four years is a tall order."

Bachmann did not lay out a specific plan to drop prices on Tuesday. But her campaign website says that as president, she would ease restrictions on drilling and roll back federal regulations on the shale gas industry.

While increased oil and gas drilling in the United States may create good-paying jobs, reduce reliance on foreign oil and lower the trade deficit, it would have little impact on gas and oil prices.

Drill baby drill won't lower gas prices

That's because the amount of extra oil that could be produced from more drilling in this country is tiny compared to what the country -- and the world -- consumes.

Plus, any extra oil the United States did produce would likely be quickly offset by a cut in OPEC production.

According to a 2009 study from the government's Energy Information Administration, opening up to drilling areas off the East Coast, West Coast and the west coast of Florida would yield an extra 500,000 barrels a day by 2030.

The world currently consumes 89 million barrels a day, and by then would likely be using over 100 million barrels.

After OPEC got done adjusting its production to reflect the increased American output, gas prices might drop a whopping three cents a gallon, the study said.

IF (and this is a big IF) I could get congress to enact my plan.... I could get gasoline under $2.00 easily within four years.

Obama was going to get unemployment under 8% with the stimulus.

Politicians are like Richard Pryor, you tell a lie, I tell a lie and we compliment each others lies.

And we already have proof of Obama's lunacy..In 2008, President Obama said " that if the economic stimulus bill was passed, unemployment would not go over 8%."

Damn, you are right for once. He missed by a whole percentage point.

Proof positive of his insanity.

LOL.... I have posted this here before... but just for you... this one time only superfreak special free report....

1) Open ALL domestic drilling sites of nat gas and oil.... our environmental standards are better than most oil producing countries, it would create jobs here, keep the money here and thus dramatically reduce our trade deficit

2) 'man to the moon' initiative would be to convert transportation in the US to nat gas. 70% of our oil consumption is via transportation. We have the technology to convert existing vehicles (most anyway) to nat gas. We would need the infrastructure buildout to support nat gas distribution. Every gasoline station would be required to have nat gas distribution within three years. Every new vehicle starting in year 3 would be required to be nat gas ready. Existing vehicles would be required to have the conversion tech done within three years. (yes, you can offer some subsidies to low income families if needed)

3) Strong dollar policy. Start supporting the dollar instead of weakening it. Commodity prices will fall in response.

4) It would take about $30B to convert the approximately 100 million two stroke engines out there (found predominantly in Asia/Africa). I would ensure the Envirofit technology (they made the patents free for anyone to use) was used to convert as many in the 4 years as possible. Ideally this would be done in conjunction with Europe and China, but at a cost of $30B, I would fund it solely from the US if need be given the benefit it would have to the country in terms of reducing oil demand worldwide. (not to mention pollution and thus potentially also reduce health risks to a degree)

http://www.envirofit.org/direct-injection-program.html

In comparison to the carbureted 2-stroke engine, Envirofit’s two-stroke DI retrofit kit reduces carbon monoxide emissions by 76%, carbon dioxide emissions by 35%, and hydrocarbon emissions by 89%. At the same time, fuel use is reduced by 35% and oil by 50%.

Actually 10.6% and NEVER GOT CLOSE TO 8% and these are facts.....

And in Bachmanns case...we don't even know if it will happen yet....so to claim proof of anything is stupidity in the extreme...

Electric cars, SuperFreak!

Demand for natural gas is already exploding.

Please research electric cars, or post your doubts here. I will be glad to answer any questions regarding their effectiveness.

I too would like a bit more information. My guess, and it is only a guess, is that he's thinking of driving down the price through decreased demand by moving over to LNG for automobiles... But I too need a subscription to the newsletter.

Dune, this is a troll free thread. Thanks for not posting on it.

Superfreak, knowing that promising $2 gas would make headlines would you feel confindent enough in your plan that you would make that claim if it was you on the campaign trail?

Without question. Lay it out just as I did above.... show people not only the economic benefits, but also the environmental.... While some people may have other ideas with which to reduce oil consumption and increase supply, the plan above is what I would propose. You show a concrete plan to reduce oil consumption AND increase supply..... oil prices will fall... oh yes, they will fall.

No need to guess.... I posted it above.... :)

I will take her goal of two dollars per gallon anyday.

When the current shithead in office was asked about high gas prices....

Obama needled one questioner who asked about gas prices, now averaging close to $3.70 a gallon nationwide, and suggested that the gentleman consider getting rid of his gas-guzzling vehicle.
“If you’re complaining about the price of gas and you’re only getting 8 miles a gallon, you know,” Obama said laughingly. “You might want to think about a trade-in.”who told an audience that if they wants to raise it to five dollars a gallon.

You can tell how out of touch he is with the rest of the population and the problems they are currently having with bankruptcies, no credit and no jobs and tell someone to buy a new car. What a fucking piece of shit.

Nat gas SUPPLY is what is exploding... which is driving the price down.

I have no doubt that electric cars could benefit us as well. I don't know enough about them to say concretely that they would be better or worse than nat gas vehicles... but here are my doubts and perhaps you can link me up to research than can alleviate them....

1) Efficiency.... if you have to burn nat gas (or worse, coal) to generate the electricity to run the car, I have a hard time believing that is more efficient than simply burning the nat gas in the vehicles

2) Range... How far can an electric car go on one charge?

3) Recharge time.... How long does it take to recharge the battery to full capacity?

The latter two concerns are what I believe will stop people from buying electric in bulk... especially those people who drive longer distances. I think electric makes sense for travel within the city as it would drastically reduce noise pollution as well as air.

Bottom line... I am not suggesting that nat gas vehicles are the be all end all. I welcome ANY and ALL alternatives to those vehicles that are gasoline based.

One other consideration for those vehicles that need to continue with gasoline.... algae based biofuels have been used by the Air Force with good success. I would also add that to nat gas vehicles and electric.
