The proposed constitutional amendment, backed by prominent presidential hopefuls like Mitt Romney and Michelle Bachmann, is part of a broader fight over U.S. debt that could lead to a default on government obligations.

Though the amendment is likely to fail, Republicans are planning a separate initiative to slash $3.75 trillion from the budget over ten years in exchange for raising the U.S. debt ceiling.

In times of economic crisis, it is standard practice for governments to increase spending to stimulate economic activity.

The Obama administration tackled the 2007-2009 with a nearly $800 billion stimulus plan.

A group of prominent economists published a letter condemning the Republican amendment proposal.

They said such initiatives could thwart the government's flexibility during economic downturns.

In a recent Gallup poll, jobs trumped the faux deficit crisis and tax concerns cooked up by the GOP.

The problem with the BBA in its current form is that it would necessitate raising taxes. I have no objection to raising taxes as a part of an overall tax reform package, but we'd literally have to double taxes to make a significant impact on the deficit. Obviously, that isn't an option. Do Republicans think they'll actually be able to cut $1.6 trillion in spending immediately?

I would support a BBA that takes effect in 8 or so years. This would give the Congress sufficient time to get their shit together.

The two go hand-in-hand. We lose our credit rating, and the economy plummets.

You liberals are in serious denial. You actually believe we can continue spending this way without any consequence?

Power-hungry Teatard terrorists who are threatening the world with extortion are misrepresenting the concerns of Americans, according to poll data seen by Gallup.

Gallup reports that the GOP fixation with repealing health care reform is out of step with majority opinion, too.

Mentions of healthcare have been lower over the last five months -- remaining in the single digits -- after reaching 16% in February. Mentions of dissatisfaction with government have been slightly lower in the past three months than earlier this year.

The Teatard terrorists treasonously tainting the nation are sowing the seeds of destruction with their deliberately distorted view of a majority mandate.

Americans want jobs.

Cutting spending and extending tax cuts for the rich are all the Teatards offer.

Americans continue to believe the economy and unemployment/jobs are the nation's top problems, with the deficit/debt situation in third place. More generally, about three-quarters of Americans say some aspect of the economy is the top problem facing the nation, far more than mention non-economic concerns such as dissatisfaction with government, healthcare, wars, immigration, or education.
